Just watched Dempsey vs Carpentier in HD

All great fighters have easy/pointless fights against men with zero chance of winning. And often.
Perhaps because they are so good.
Carpentier put up some respectable resistance, to be fair.

If I wanted to marvel at greatness I'd read a dozen old newspaper reports of a unfilmed 10 round no decision.

 

ESPN on demand has this fight on their ondemand network under classic fights. you can choose hd or not, but it is not hd. thats just the designation for the tv screen. but anyone can watch it on tv right now on ESPN on demand with the training and afterfight and all

 

There are a ton of guys who look amazing with tricks and everything while hitting the speed bag or jumping ropes. It doesn't mean they can fight a lick. The only person going down the rabbit hole is the one gushing about how people look in the gym. You know who else looked great in the gym: Maurice Harris. The guy has a 50/50 record. Like I said, you want to be impressed with Carpentier getting his head kicked in in an uncompetitive match because he knew how to a work a speed bag be my quest, just don't **** on my leg and tell me it raining by trying to convince either he or Dempsey were impressive or there was any drama to that fight at all.

As for Mike Tyson's early fights people marvel at those because he was 19 years old. Nobody is lauding him for beating Sammy Scaff in an all time sense.

 

After much consideration I went with Calzaghe was favourite but Lacy was favourite. Calzaghe had pulled out of 3 fights with Glen Johnson and his career looked to have stalled and fizzled out. Lacy had just decimated Robin Reid who had a close fight with Calzaghe that some thought he won. Reid was fresh off a controversial loss to Ottke, the clearest robbery in Ottke's career (most of Ottke's supposed 'robberies' weren't).

FYI Calzaghe also wanted to pull out of the Lacy fight but his dad wouldn't let him.

This shows you don't really pay attention to modern boxing.

 

Gunboat smith said to Fleischer Carpentier hit him hardest circa 32

 

Carp was LT heavyweight champion and European hwt champion. There is a long line a LT hwt champions getting a crack at the hwt title. Carp was a beast physically. Not big of course but a chiseled and cut athlete. Not an ounce of fat on him.

If you watch the ko closely you get to see Dempseys favorite combination. Right to the heart followed by a left hook to the chin. Fleischer called this combination the most devastating in boxing history.

 

Anyone that denies that Georges Carpentier had one of the greatest right crosses in boxing history is just blowing smoke...Whoever Carpentier nails solidly goes to LaLa land...

 

And nobody is claiming its an all time great win either.

So, because he was in shape it makes the match a legit competition? GTFO! I never said he was a fat pig I said he was an overrated fop whose record was built on smoke and mirrors.

And right before this match he said Carpentier had no chance and would get knocked out, along with Dempsey by Harry Wills.

Really? Because Carpentier hit middleweights and LHWs with that same right hand and they not only didnt budge but they knocked him out. In fact name one single world class fighter in any division that Carpentier knocked out? Just one. Because he didnt. He was great at knocking out euro trash. Guys like Beckett and Wells who got knocked out by every capable fighter they faced but when he stepped up his power was gone and so was his ability to win. In fact Carpentier didnt just lose regularly at the world class level but he usually got knocked out or dominated. Thats an indisputable fact.

 

Who exactly did he beat at light heavyweight? The Levinsky bout stunk to high Denmark. He literally ran from a match against Greb. Later, he was unmercifully taken out by an amateurish Siki. He's not the calibre of fighter that screams "Heavyweight Title Contender". And it really wouldn't matter so much if Dempsey had other defenses against great and deserving challengers, and Carp was just sprinkled in for flavor. But unfortunately it's just another in a line of underwhelming opponents.

And half of the guys in my gym are chiseled. I don't think any deserve a shot at the heavyweight title.

 

All pertinent observations.

While I lean towards the idea that Carpintier was overrated, this gives it a bit of perspective.

 

i can see enough truth in the first paragraph not to argue it further, not sure what i said to make you think i can't spot a mismatch so I'll just put that down to your need to feel superior to people, unless you want to quote me saying it was a great victory for dempsey?


pathetic? yes, your sympathy for him? the same as mine but irrelevant. i didn't pretend it puts him at a disadvantage, i said it potentially did, lets consider:

fight 1 - fighter a and fighter b both prepare mentally and physically for a real fight.

fight 2 - fighter a thinks fighter b will dive so enters the ring untrained and ready for pantomime time, fighter b is ready to fight.

if fighter a in fight 2 isn't potentially at a disadvantage compared to his position in fight 1 then i'm a monkeys uncle. it's not an apologist view, it's a realistic one.
