First of all, I felt Michael Spinks showed an unbelievable amount of resolve and will to get to the final bell. He set a pretty high pace early on, throwing everything in round 4, and was visibly exhausted as a result. However, for every time his mouth would gape, and he'd beg for water to be put on his head in the corner, he just kept on going. I felt he deserved the victory, his punches were finding the target more than Holmes punches, and he even out-jabbed the champion during periods. Holmes looked like a fighter who was past his best days. He was not doing any body work when it was clear to everyone, including the commentary team, that a few well placed liver shots would have had Spinks in all sorts of trouble. Likewise, his jab was not as consistent as it usually is, and his right hand was virtually non existent. That would have made all of the difference in this fight. Great performance by Michael Spinks.
Agreed. Watch and score the rematch. A very bad decision. Holmes took the first 5 rounds, and 4 of them as clear as a whistle. Which means he only needed to win 3 of the remaining 10 rounds to win the fight. Not sure what the judges were watching that night.
Spinks took the first fight, to me there's no doubt. but the second fight was much much closer ... Great performance by Michael Spinks, he fought his heart out.
I thought Spinks won the first fight fair and square, mainly with his workrate and aggression as the thread starter said. Second fight was much closer and a questionable decision IMO.
Holmes won the first five roundsa of the rematch , that is why I thought he was refering to the second bout ...
Great performance by Spinks in the first fight..Larry probably took him lightly and was starting the decline but he was still a very good heavyweight champ. The second was a pretty clear decision for Holmes...He beat Spinks up at times but Michael pushed him all the way with his jab and workrate. Im a pretty big Spinks fan and Ive never scored that rematch for him.
As a Holmes fan, I must say Spinks did indeed win the first match. However, Holmes won the second match by a wider margin...yet he was robbed.
