...courtesy of an ESB buddy from Leeds:thumbsup and I thought it was close... ...but, in my book, Joe won it by 2 points, including the one point rightfully taken off Reid for being dirty... I have got to say, though: Robing Reid gave a very classy post fight interview....Respect, Robin!:deal Joe said "rematch", Frank said "definitely rematch"...shame there was no rematch - Reid deserved another shot at the Champ... ...out of all the fights I saw Joe in, Robin Reid gave him most trouble...he wouldn't have been good enough to beat him in a rematch, but he would have deserved it... :good
Yeah, I saw this fight a while back and it was the closest Calzaghe fight I've seen. Reid tagged him with some nice right hands too. Not sure what my score was, but I know I had Calzaghe winning.
There was a touch of class from the Calzaghe fight that carried over in the Froch fight...despite Robin being shot...you just KNOW that had he been in his prime he would have starched Froch... Robin should have not even faced Lacy...but in any case, should have retired after that loss.
Excellent fight. I, like you, had it close but clear for Joe. The second half of the fight was extremely close but Joe's great start and the point deduction for Reid made the difference. I think the fact that Reid finished well is the reason why some people scored it for him. I agree that a rematch would've made for a great spectacle, but I don't think Reid had the ability to fight much better than he did that night. Calzaghe, on the other hand, could've (and I suspect would've) stepped it up the second time round. That said, there's no way he's stopping Reid in 10 fights; the man was a tank back then.
reid was a ****ing beast when on top of his game. the lacy fight was an utter let down though, his training for it was said to be awful. he was actually training in his hotel corridor at times because of some **** up with gym arrangements.
I disagree, Reid gets vastly overrated for his performance against Joe. He lost his title to a faded Malinga, embarrassing in it's own right. He may have been sick for that fight, true, but if you watched him in his "prime", the rest of his title reign was very unimpressive as well. Hacine bloody Cherifi took him to a split decision in England and he looked very average in fights against Wharton and Nardiello. A decent beltholder at his very best, with a good chin which would keep him in fights. Let's not forget Silvio Branco outboxed him. :good As to Reid v Calzaghe, I had it 6 rounds each, with calzaghe winning by a point due to the deduction. Don't think it's that close if JC's hand wasn't (reportedly) hurt. He did deserve the rematch though, of that there is no doubt.
Somehow, it seems Reid, for one reason or another fell short...a shame; maybe with a bit more luck he could have made it big!
I'm not too sure it was luck he needed, more some non-corrupt judges who knew how to score a fight; he should've by all rights beaten Ottke.
I disagree x2! Reid was certainly inconsitant but I thought he looked good against Wharton and lets not forget he easily beat Ottke , only to get shafted. As for his loss to the awkward Malinga, well Benn got schooled by that guy twice. So he cant be all that bad. (Despite Jones thrashing him!)
You are right! I've noticed that too - before their fight, after their fight, much after their fight, including after the Froch v. Reid fight - Joe keeps lashing out at Reid - no one seems to have gotten under his skin as much as Reid... ...the reason, to me, seems to be that he has always felt that people thought it was close and that Reid should have been given another shot...but, more importantly, because Reid was the only guy that ever got the nod against him, from a judge - we all know how much Joe hates losing...he cannot bear the thought that this guy was deemed better than him...
I personally think is underrated by many. He won the title in Italy against the much more experienced Nardiello which for a 25 year old with about 3 and a half years pro experience is pretty impressive. As a champion he was very erratic. When he won the title some pundits wondered whether he had come to a title too early which proved to be the case. He was still developing and maturing as a fighter when he was champion which resulted in some dissapointing performances. It seemed he was still trying to figure out what type of fighter he was. He brawled against Pretorious and boxed against Wharton. He made a huge tactical error against Malinga who as a taller awkward spoiler/counter puncher who would hold advantages in a boxing match against Reid. Reid had a horrible night that night and simply came in with the wrong game plan He did struggle with Cherifi which at the time looked like another poor performance but Cherifi won the WBC middleweight title in his next fight. Personally I thought he did well in his fights against Nardiello and Wharton. Nardiello was a champion fighting in front of a home crowd and Wharton was seen as a dangerous contender at the time. He lost to Branco mainly due to ring rust. He had lost to Calzaghe and hadn't fought in over a year. His performances against Calzaghe and Ottke for me prove he was a top fighter at 168lbs. He was erratic but at his best he was capable of giving anyone at supermiddle a tough fight.
