After watching this fight I came away with one impression of Joshua Clottey...and that is he's underated. He DOMINATED the 1st 4 rds of the fight with his left hook and Margarito couldn't penetrate Clottey's Winky Wright esk defense. The turning point was when Clottey hurt his left hand was then limited for the remander of the fight. I still scored the fight 6 rds a piece with Clottey edging out the 8th and 12th rds. He in my opinion would give any of the top welters a long night and would be a serious threat to dethrone King Mayweather.

What are your impressions of Joshua "Hitter" Clottey?

    Good speed
    Tight defense
    Average punching power
    Good combination puncher
    Nice left hook

A solid fighter who would be competitive with most welters but IMO is in over his head against Cotto and Mayweather

    Lets not forget good chin.....

I think his problem at times is that he fights to the level of his competition.... Against Margarito he looked spectacular... Against Corrales he looked great... He looked alrite against Alvarez and Cruz... His only losses were to Marg and Baldomir and he was winning both of those fights at one point... He'll give both Cotto and Mayweather problems.... His handspeed will pose probems to Cotto early on... But I think that they would make for a competitive, entertaining fight...

He should have beat Baldomir but was robbed by a DQ. Keep in mind that was also a long time ago.

Clottey is very good but will be blocked out of big fights for awhile. Until Cotto steps up if he gets by Margo. Margo will most certainly fight Clottey again should the IBF hold out till september.

He has a future. No doubt about it. But he does get tired midway through fights. He did against Baldomir as well and gave up some rounds.

hell yeah hes underrated. His defense especially. People paint him as someone who does not possess any fundamental. The man has plenty. His defense is top notch, he blocks punches well with his arms and has a great left hand. And I believe he beats cotto.

I feel the exact same way, i dont understand people who hold that loss against him when its obvious he hurt his hands... I think he puts a hurting on a lot of guys, and i just hope he gets his shot before he declines.

Doesn't Clottey have some stamina issues because he's a large WW and has such a muscular frame? But i agree with the thread originator. Clottey was whipping up on Marg until he hurt his left hand and that was huge because his left hook is his bread and butter. The guy just has the tools to do a lot of good things.

    He gets tired.

It's natural for someone who relies too much on speed and not enough on straight toe to toe fighting.

The hand thing was only part of it if any at all. He was tired and Margo normally comes on midway. Lets also remember Margo had the wrist injury and ankle injury coming into the fight. Far as I'm concerned Margo won fair and square. But Clottey is good.

You are right . . . Clottey is one hell of a fighter but under rated because of his under achivements.

I would love to see him mix horn with Mosley or Cotto . . . then we will see what he is really made off.

One good fight against Margarito is not enough for us to make a clear pronouncement of what he really is as a fighter.

Clottey is a solid WW. He realized he couldn't hurt or deter Margarito and Antonio kept on coming on. I think it was Margarito's tenacity more than Joshua's excuse.

For one margarito made no adjustments in the ring and was open for the same counter punches all fight. For two, sometimes Clottey would not throw the wide open shots he had b/c of the pain. For three MARGARITO DID NO DAMAGE TO CLOTTEY AT ALL BUT CLOTTEY CAME OUT COMPLAINING ABOUT HIS FINGER AFTER TAKING WHOLE ENTIRE ROUNDS OFF from the tornadoe. Clottey did not stop punching b/c of **** Margarito did. He did nothing but open himself up for more counters. If you ****ing watched the fight you could see it was his hands bothering him, nothing else.

I'm sorry Joshua, I didn't know u were an ESB'er! I think u did ur best, I guess, for ur hand or whatever situation. But, I still think u know and I know, that Margarito kept on pressing and u couldn't take that from a big and strong Mexican WW.

I just watched the fight again, I had Margo ahead handily on the cards. It was very obvious that after the 4th round, he tried many different styles of fighting because of something, presumably his hand. I feel like Margo won that fight, and would beat him again if they rematched.

Clottey is a good fighter, very technically sound, terrific defense, but his stamina problems and lack of work rate will make him sitting ducks for the big boys.

I think margo could have put some more steam on those punches and knocked him out.
