Just watched this fight again........ Why???? Well, I am lookin for what might Cotto do different in a rematch. I am aware saying things is easier than being there. This is just my opinion. First, I think the Gomez fight really hurt Cotto. He dominated Gomez so easily and his power and boxing skills looked so great he thought he was going to do the same thing with Margarito. But Antonio Margarito was a whole different animal. Cotto totally abandoned the body attack. He looked like he was expecting Margarito's face to looked like Gomez face. It didn't. He really gave Margarito a boxing lesson for a few rounds. But Margarito kept on coming. We knew coming to this fight MArgarito's head is like a brick. He needed to get some air out of Margo. But didn't do it. Margarito is also naturally bigger and heavier than Miguel Cotto. Every time Cottto backed up to the ropes Margarito was able to use his whole body weight to throw his punches. The few times Cotto was able to turn aound and put Margarito on the ropes, he backed away. Insisting on his boxing from the outside, again. If the rematch is ever made, I want to see Cotto get off the ropes push Margarito to the ropes and punish him to the body. Put some weight on him too. So he gets tired. Margarito is always walking forward. As soon as Cotto's back touch the ropes he needs to turn around and use Margo's own weight to push him towards the ropes. Keep him there and punish him. Difficult??? Helll yeah!!! Impossible??? I don't think so. But I tell you one thing. Cotto needs to be on supreme condition in order to do it. I also wonder how much was Cotto affected by all that blood he swalllowed .
I think Ricky is totally right, Cotto gave Margo a boxing lessons for the first few rounds, but later on he abandoned that plan to go in and trade blows with margo and that was the worst thing he could do, he had to try to attack the body, margo`s head and chin are to hard. If for the rematch Cotto takes it more seriously and stays boxing and moving ( not running)for 12 rounds he can defeat Margo.
That's not what I saw. He gave Margo a boxing lesson in round 1, that's it. The rest of the fight he was backpeddling and getting tagged. Yeah, he won rounds 3-5 as well, but he definately took more punishment in those rounds. I really didn't see him trading much with Margo. As far as attacking the body, good luck with that. Margo actually protects well to the body. He keeps those arms tucked; protecting his sides. He leaves his head wide open, but there aren't many openings to the body.
I guess Im the only person here who thinks Margarito's face swelled up faster than Cotto's did. But I could be wrong but to me Margarito's face looked more swollen by the 7th round, specially around the eyes.
I don't think cotto can box much better than he did the 1st time. his plan was to box and not get hurt. well it didn't work, and if he stands toe to toe with margo, it will end faster . cotto is a pressure fighter, once that don't work he has problems.
I would agree marg beats cotto 10 out of 10, probably worse every time. I am cotto fan as well. Even after watching the fight several times it wasn't until i saw the still shots. Holy ****, Cotto wrinkling Marg's body and I've never seen the expression on Cotto's face, he new what he was up against that night earlier than the 7th round. I still can't get over HBO, all 3 of them. WHAT FIGHT WHERE THEY WATCHING? Completely up Cotto's ass when he was taking a nasty WHOOPIN'! Ialso agree that Marg won a couple more rounds than he was given.
Definitely.. I think the main thing he needs to do is stay off the ropes.. In the first fight, Cotto started laying on the ropes in the later rounds while he let Margo tee'd off on him, which isn't a good idea.. I'm pretty confident Cotto could win a rematch.. Just change up the gameplan a little.. Don't even think about a KO or even a stoppage.. Just try to outbox him the whole 12 rounds and stay off them ****in' ropes..
I think that his nose was a major factor. I have been accused of making excuses but the blood he wasswallowing really slowed him down a lot as well as the body shots that Margarito was able to land. I trully beleive that Cotto hits harder than Margo he just cant take the blows like Margo can. This was also Kellerman's observation.
Margo has Cotto's number, no doubt. I just wish Cotto would have boxed more on the inside and attacked the body. I haven't read any Cotto interviews about this fight. Are there any? I am intrigued to know his thoughts on what happened.
For everyone saying Cotto gave Margo a boxing lesson for the first few rounds, PLEASE rewatch round 2 when they go toe to toe about halfway through and Margarito bloodies Cottos nose. It was the first brawl of the fight, and I knew right there that Cotto was going to lose. He was trading leather and Margo hit him with a body shot and a hook upstairs, and he got this look in his eyes of "Holy ****, I cant hurt him". Nothing he had landed was having any visible effect, but Margo was hurting HIM. I dont know if anyone else noticed it, it was only for a split second, but I knew right there that Margo had it.
Not at all. Margarito is taller, but both these guys are the same size. Cotto weighed 159 lbs against Oktay Urkal, and Margarito weighed 157 against Paul Williams. Miguel Cotto is a big boned, stalky, extremely powerful Welterweight. Don't get it twisted. Emanuel Steward was talking about how much stronger and more powerful looking Cotto was than Shane Mosley - and Shane is immensely strong and two inches taller than Cotto.
