Garrus told me to watch some Monzon as I had only seen bits and bats. I had this fight in a FOTY collection for some time so finally got round to it. First things first really enjoyed it both guys were very game. For Monzon specifically, he was very wild early on with the left hook but settled down and used that jab (both guys landed a lot of jabs). Started shooting the right hand straight to the body with a lot of venom, also mixed in the left uppercut to the body. Was surprised how rough they both were inside. Both held with the left and hit heavily with the right to the back of the head, very nasty. Ref was very quick in breaking them all fight to be fair. Seemed very nowty as we say in the UK did Monzon, maybe even dirty.:yep Smashing right hand bang on the chin to finish it. In the 12rd I think (No rd number or timer). Very impressed, better late than never
Monzon had one hell of a righthand, but arthritis soon took it's toll and he had to modify his style somewhat. He became more controlled and methodical in his approach.
He had a great jab. It's easy for me to look at Monzon and think that he's overrated and that he's not that impressive. The more I watch, the more those thoughts evaporate. He was a master of maintaining distance, utilizing his height, had straight, accurate punches, and was completely unflappable. So consistent and businesslike. Not a big puncher, but this is an example of a hard, but not dangerous-punching fighter absolutely turning the lights out on a really good fighter. Just all of a sudden, I got you in the corner, here's a laser right hand... Beautifully timed.
Monzon had a way of aiming his right hand to the side or back of his opponent's head when he threw that punch. His opponent didn't like that sh!t at all....as it happened over & over again throughout a fight.
Carlos did like to throw his rabbit punches. Tonna went down from one and tried to get a DQ but the ref counted him out instead. Whenever I see the stuff for fantasy fights between him and Hopkins, I see Hopkins fielding one of them and going down like he was shot and looking for a DQ.
'The Monzon Effect' is used a fair bit to describe fighters who appear boring and/or labourers but who get better and better with each viewing. I had a similar feeling watching Cervantes years ago, but now I love him. Well, really like anyway. Like the effect his fights seem to have on people, in style he was a slow burner. However, once he'd found his way into a fight it was game over. His jab was on point, his timing and judging of distance nigh on perfect and with his heavy hands, iron chin and determination the only thing that would happen to the opponent was more hurt. Methodical as ****. Monzon would usually 'check' his opponent in five or six rounds. Then they were done. Then he'd go party :yep
Thats the only Monzon fight I own. Youtube for the rest unfortunately. Also got Marciano vs La Starza in black and white. Thats up after some more Monzon. Which order and which fights next guys? Napoles? Briscoe?
Angie Dundee thought that Napoles would beat Monzon....and was very surprised how easily Carlos handled Jose.
There are at least 3 different versions of the fight. Bootleg camera/no commentary/color version. English commentary/black&white version. Argentinian TV/some rounds missing/black&white version.
I like this footage.....you get a judges type view. 80% of the time the opponent is pressing forward.... and Monzon is going backward....but still punching. You can see why some fighters think they could have beaten Monzon....put Hagler in there in lieu of Briscoe.
