He should've just quit then. But I guess he didn't want to look like Oscar and some of the others that quit on their stool.
i have read in several places that cotto actually said he was done at the end of the 11th and his corner told him to give them one more round....sorry i said 10 earlier.
I have am reviewing different accounts now...and some are saying that Cotto didnt want to quit, but his father did want the fight to be stopped...cant really get a clear definite answer.
if it was only a 55 seconds left..i could see bayless letting it go..but 2 mintues is a long time to take a beating when your not defending yourself and you have already taken 33 mintues of beating.
I think Bayless expected Cotto's corner to stop it - i guess he wanted to let them take the decision to prevent comments like this. After his corner lacked the guts to do so after the 9th, I'm pretty sure Bayless wanted to stop it since the 10th, but Manny didn't press enough in the 10th or the 11th for the ref to interfere. From then on, I'm pretty sure Bayless, Roach, Pacquiao and even Cotto himself were just waiting for Cotto's corner to throw the towel. As Pac unleashed, Bayless could finally end it gracefully.
No one's brought this up but maybe the ref didn't want Cotto to end it by decision. Watching the fight over Cotto is draining the fight of all of its drama, taking a great fight and not fighting, but in full retreat without any desire to engage at all. Maybe the ref was pissed that Cotto was taking that route.
I believe that he would have quit but he had already taken the knee against Margo. He was still living that down.
