I agree with this...remember Z gorres who fought a night before pac-cotto...Gorres was winning actually buy from what I read, he was knocked down in the last round and that did teh damage and made him collapse afterwards I agree with the otehr poster, bayless would have been justified had he stopped the fight earlier
You know Cotto was taking some real punishment. But that close to the final bell hard to decide. I agree with people saying it was the corners job to do it even earlier than the ref. After all that's his people and the saw what his face looked like. I can't say I would agree on way or the other, but if I was in that corner a different story. There was no way he was gonna win on points, and he never had Pac hurt in the fight for them to think there would be a KO for Cotto. You know back in the day guys may have taken more punishment, but look at the repercussions for that. If a guys way down and theres really no posibility for him to pull out the W I have no problem with anyone stopping the fight to protect another mans health.
Did you even watch the fight? Do you know the concept of sustained punishment and how that might be worse than one big shot? He was getting his ass kicked from round round 6 on.
I've seen worse. But yes, he was getting his butt kicked. I think his motivation was to just finish the fight. I feel bad for the guy but yes, better to be saved and fight another day since the result would have been a loss either way. So, I'll agree with the posters who agree with the stoppage. Like I said, I was never married to this argument.
although different sports, Diego's face was worse against Penn and aloud to continue. since his running skills seemed just fine, He would have gotten out without any more damage, but that's besides the point. I will retract my argument though. The stoppage was fine.:good
Funny everyone called Oscar a quitter though but you guys are saying if Cotto quit it would have been okatsch
Yea. tough to take a fighter who is an ATG seriously. You make a lot of sense hiding behind your little computer in the comfort of your own home. Real valid point there son:-(
No one cared that he quit right after the fight. It was when he started running his mouth and said he wasn't getting hurt by Pac's punches that people started to ridicule him as a quitter.
I'll show the "unable to defend himself" argument anyway. This content is protected I could find better pictures, if I tried harder... but here, you have Cotto being brutalized, his legs buckling, and starting to lean against the ropes to prop himself up. No problem. Well, except for his bottom lip tucked under his chin there. This content is protected This is what brought the ref in. Remember that the HBO camera was behind Cotto, at this point, so this body language was invisible to us at home. Also, this shot is showing Cotto's starting to recover from what happened. Anyway. Cotto's attempting to stand back up here, but his legs & guard won't respond and the rope is the only thing holding him up. It happened very briefly, but the referee has to (well, should) respond to that, immediately.
You weren't as close as Bayless was. He could see Cotto's grotesque face, hear his sounds, and see his body language.
It was bull**** because he let Cotto take 4 rounds where he was running and surviving. He took some punishment. The ref had to be thinking either stop it right there, or if not give him the chance to hear the bell. It's one or the other in my eyes. He sort of had this half way house idea, he lets him go for numerous rounds where he was never in the fight and then suddenly a meaningful punch lands in round 12 and he jumps in.
Well my friend i and probably every other man on this forum will strongly disagree , im not gonna go into why because frankly your thread stinks , the fight should of been stopped at the end of the 10th by Cotto's corner , i think everybody including Bayless was sure the corner would pull him out before the 12th (end of rnd 11) , and when they didnt Bayless did what he had to do !!!!!!!! Go watch the replay , see how much Cotto protests , he doesnt , he wears a frown for all of 1 second then smiles and winks and Bayless !!!!!! Question ??????? , could Cotto have stopped Manny in the 12th !!!!!!! Answer - NO !!!!!! atschatsch
