Just watched Pernell Whitaker vs Julio Cesar Chavez

  1. First time watching. Trying to do my boxing revision. I already knew it was a draw so was interested to see a close fight.
How was that ever scored a draw? Sweet Pea spanked him! Completely.
****ing boxing man, my favourite sport but why did **** like this happen and why does it still happen today?
That's me in a huff for today now.

You see it occasionally to be honest.

A lot of fans think pressure = winning, and hence judges get swayed into making bad decisions.

See Pacquiao vs. Marquez as a pretty good example

It was your classic fight, in regards to a counter puncher vs. a pressure fighter by the way.

By that I mean, your counter puncher nearly always dominates.

Why Pacquiao would probably struggle with someone like Mayweather. It's hard for a high energy guy to win, when he's getting bombed ever 30 seconds with the big shot.

I think Pac vs. Mayweather would go a similar way.

All Sweet Pea did in that fight, was land big, accurate shots, every time Chavez tried to get a flurry going. Make him take a step back

Very hard for high energy guys, who throw a lot of shots, to get into the fight, when a counter puncher just breaks up their momentum.

That's what happens. Guys like Pacquiao rely on momentum. Building up pressure. It's very very hard to do when a quality counter puncher keeps breaking up the momentum with the big shot.

See Pacquiao vs. Marquez. Or even Clottey vs. Pacquiao

Judges are not fans, they're supposed to be trained professionals.

And I haven't heard of cases where judges consult with the fans before scoring a round, so I don't see how they could get 'swayed'.

That was one of the biggest robberies in history! I cannot even watch that fight again, just thinking about about it makes me :fire:fire:fire:fire. Even stevie wonder could see who won that fight

  7. Yeh was an infuriating result. All Chavez shots seem to hit his arms or gloves wheras Pea's were crisp and flush.
Was not happy at that result. He's class Whitaker. Watching a bunch of his fights today.

i dont think pac vs. May will be similar at all compared to this fight. Pacs in and out movement and unpredictability is no way similar to the come forward style of chavez. And floyds powers is no way on the same level as Pea.

Whitaker dominated and got truly robbed. its alright though the real fans know who won that . Randall was teh one to take Chavez's zero but to me it was still Whitaker who did.

pac vs marquez was a toss up fight after 12 rounds, thats how close it was.
Alexander vs kotelnik is a better example.

The draw was not really justifiable at all, but it was hardly a schooling. Some of those rounds were pretty close, and the ones Whitaker won clearly were still almost always competitive.

The early part of the fight is how I would technically explain defensive vs offensive upper-body movement to someone. Brilliance.
