Fullmer actually boxed with Ray in that fight. He showed what a deceptively good (if unorthodox-looking) boxer he was.
The way he was hitting when they were clinching reminded me of a less slick version of Hopkins on the inside. Interesting fight. I have not seen a whole lot of SRR footage, but he seemed a bit more flat-footed in this one than I was accustomed to seeing, at least in the early going.
What a tough hombre that Fullmer was though. You just couldn't discourage the guy and he was extremely effective at making the competition fight a Fullmer fight and not the other way around. And that's one helluva task being long in the tooth and taking on a guy like Fullmer.
Fullmer fought super dirty and should have been DQd in that fight. Even so it was close and in my opinion Im not so sure Robinson shouldnt have gotten a draw. Fullmer got away with so much garbage during his career its ridiculous. Easily one of the dirtiest fighters Ive ever seen. His brother Don was like a small version of Gene only without what limited talent Gene had.
Yes, he appeared to be fighting dirty, but he was punching until the ref broke them up and Robinson wasn't doing much in terms of complaining. Tough to blame Fullmer for that., SRR was technically floored twice. My initial impression was that Fullmer definitely won.
Yeah, it does suck, but I would rather have watched most of the fight than have not seen it at all, ya know?
