You need to be more than a counter puncher. If Silva is only a counter puncher than hes nowhere near as good as people think, and the fighters hes fought are about as dumb as a sack of rocks. The Silva is a "counter puncher" excuse is getting a little old. He should have disposed Leites in the nearest waste receptacle in no more than 3 rounds. He didnt want to do, the openings were there he just didnt exploit them. However, his performance was nowhere near as bad as Leites.
Bingo. JMM is the most technical fighter in the world. He is known for counter punching but he can do alot of other things as well. Thats what makes him so great.
you probably have never watch a floyd mayweather fight if you haven't heard boo's for a boxer putting on the so called sweet science against his opponent Look it's not that i dont appreciate silva's skills but the fight just suck. Silva tried to fight but leites didn't. I know silva was hurting leites legs with all those kicks but he could have tried to go for the takedown. I mean if he wanted the fight at the ground so bad then he could have tried taking down silva. Silva is not that hard to takedown, many fighters including travis lutter took him down.
You don't have to be intelligent to believe in mma's superiority. It's just logical. It's a discipline which enables you to use jiujitsu , greco wrestling , judo , muay thai , sambo attacks.. Boxing is as one dimensional as it gets. I love both sports but one is mutli-dimensional , the other is not. In boxing , fighters are specialised with striking...the nature of this sport forces every participants to punch at an elite level...to be "boxers". MMA doesn't have any of that...there's no klitschkos or pacquiaos type of fighters in mma & nobody really gives a ****. The average fan doesn't care because mma has nothing to do with boxing. As skilled as a guy like klitschko is , put any hw in front of him , under mma rules and he'd be helpless. A smart mma fighter would simply not play klitschko's game , take the big guy down & maul him on the ground or finish him by sub. No need to deal with klitschko's jab & reach advantage...he's be like a fish out of water... Pretty much like this 6ft 10 kickboxing champion... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU73ukGblF0 (and keep in mind , this one knows his submissions too unlike klitschko). Yes mma fighters may not be great with their boxing skills but it's not the end of the world when you have so many variants , so many ways of finishing your opponent.
After rewatching the Silva Leitas fight closely, I can see that Leitas actually put up a fight in rounds 1-2. In round 3, Silva started warming up and getting into a rhythm but at the same time seemed to get frustrated due to Leitas' passiveness. Round 4, 5, Silva seems like he gave up (in trying to press the action), started fooling around instead of fighting, and was unmotivated perhaps due to frustration, not sure. But in round 4, it looked like he could have done whatever he wanted to Leitas but he decided not to fight. In round five, Leitas actually gave him a couple of opportunities, knowing he was behind on the card, he attacked Silva a few times to no avail. In the 5th round, the it was the best opportunity for Silva to counter and take him out because Leitas was gassed and desperate, but for some reason it seemed like he no longer had faith in the fight, he seemed frustrated, and it is clear that the booing from the crowed affected him. This brings up some concerns in that if its visible he can be frustrated to the point to where he doesn't perform as well, will other fighters attempt to do the same to Silva?
btw Anderson Silva plays it "safe"...He's consistent & did what he had to do but was also too hesitant at times. There's a huge contrast with a guy like fedor (the goat of this sport)...emelianenko is putting constant pressure against anyone...standing or on the ground. & goes for the kill...at all cost. I think the problem is mostly due to ufc's rules & matchups. In pride...whenever a fighter would pull that ****... he'd receive a yellow card. (meaning a % of money is substracted from your paycheck)... This system encourages fighters to be more active and aggressive.
UFC doesnt have yellow cards. PRIDEs ruleset was better, allowed for more exciting fights and had way more educated fans than that rabble in the UFC.
There was more respect in Vale Tudo because when a fighter went down they knew it could end at any second. In the UFC a wrestler can lie on his back and take some punishment but not get ktfo with a head stomp. A fighter wont be talking too much BS in Vale Tudo unless he is ready for a war.
I was getting ready to have a go at you when I read the thread title but I agree with your post, those fans are dumbasses that probably have never been in a real fight in their shitty lives, they were really grinding on me too, they ought to learn respect from the Japanese crowds, they appreciate fighting more than any other & are extremely patient, it takes one massive boring ******* to draw boos from those guys not like those fat American ****s (no dis to Americans, Im referring strictly to those clown fans)
Its a different game, of course boxers can punch better than UFC guys because all they practice is throwing punches, MMA guys practive punching, kicking, wrestling & submissions so they are only putting about 30% of their time in to punching as opposed to 100% for boxers.
People boo Floyd as much for him being an ******* as the way he fights. The times where they have booed him for the way he fought, it was usually justified because he was over cautious when he clearly didn't need to be. That is way different to the situation with Silva because he DID consistently attack, but his opponent just kept laying down and refused to engage. In a situation like that in boxing, usually only the guy refusing to fight gets booed.
Lewis was unpopular to begin with, and it was a pro-Tua crowd before the fight even started. These examples are very similar to what is happening with Silva though - people were frustrated with Wlad & Lennox (And Tua as well) because they knew they were capable of being so much better if they stopped being super cautious. Anyway, I said earlier that of course there are exceptions and boxing fans do occasionally get on the backs of fighters who are being over-cautious. The thing that stood out in the Silva fight was how EARLY the booing started, and continued even when Silva was attacking.
and your point is............ at least wlad would have a chance of landing a big shot and koing a mma hw, put fedor in against wlad and he gets beat 100 times out of 100 in boxing rules
