I don't understand the criticism. Bika is a very tough fighter that DOES have boxing ability. Bika has made guys like Calzaghe and Bute both look very average and in my opinion, this version, trained by Ronnie Shields, is probably he best we've seen. And while I think the fight was closer than what the scorecards predicted, I think Ward decisively won the fight. Don't think for a second that guys like Froch and Dirrell wouldn't have problems with Bika's style, especially Froch. The way Bika comes over the top with that right hand could potentially put both of them on their ass, but very rarely did it land on Ward due to his excellent fundamentals and ability to adapt his defense relative to his opponent. He knew exactly what to expect. And those that question his athletic ability are out of line as well considering that Dirrell is one of the most athletic guys in th sport today, even more so than Mayweather (but not as fundamentaly sound of course), but still gets hit due to the strength of his opposition. This 168 group is no joke. As I stated before, Calzaghe who I think is a great fighter went through a very tough fight with a less refined Bika. Bika is not an easy fight for anybody, and definitely not a guarenteed win. Not to mention the fact that nobody has ever looked good against him. The criticsm regarding Ward's style is also unfounded, as Bika was responsible for just as much holding and especially rough house tactics that Ward was. I still think Ward is the favorite to win the Super Six and if he continues to win against this level of opposition, he'll be the best super middleweight of all time.
Ward admitted himself that he could have outboxed to an easier victory but that he wanted to fight for a KO and mix it up for the fans. I agree and believe him based on the progression of the fight. Bika was a tough matchup for Ward; he's a dumber version of Ward with good stamina and athleticism, just as dirty and a little bigger to boot. It was gonna be tough going on the inside and Ward still won. He showed the skill, athleticism, and attitude to be a top tier fighter. Even if he did run it close it was still a good performance, and it was a fight that he didn't have to take. Coulda coasted on with a bye but he decided to take on a live dog. Props.
Ward is the goods. He will never get credit though, Europeans will hate him regardless of what he does and others will say he cheated in every fight with dirty tactics etc.
To tell you the truth, Ward wasn't impressive overall in the fight, but he was impressive with the inside figthing against Bika who is known as a great inside fighting. Ward could have been more impressive if he fought more on the outside, using his jab and counterpunching Bika. He could have dominated Bika this way, but instead he chose the hard way fighting inside against a great inside fighter. We have to give him props for this even if he didn't look impressive overall. So, basically not an impressive overall performance but an impressive inside fighting.
the fight was a tough fight. Bika's prob tougher than some of the Super6 contestants. He's went 12 rounds with Bute & Calzaghe, both undefeated fighters. He's KO'd Peter Manfredo jr. He picked up a new legendary trainer for this fight and at the peak of his abilities. Im SOOOO tired of these "Dirty Fights" bullcrap. Sound like a bunch of ****ing panty-wearing primadonnas out there. So what if they dont stand out 2-3ft from each other and make things look visually easy for you. This is a "grinding" style, **** the was done back in the days to break down each other. Funny thing, some of these top elites never ran into a "grinder" till Andre Ward came their way. They didnt even know what the **** to do except to get beat the **** up and be mentally broken down. Bika's the very few who's mentally strong enough to be a "grinder" himself. Bika's will eventually dropped and let Ward get the best of him in the 9th round. guys who phonebooth/fight in the trenches, i'd call them "grinders" guys who call this "dirty fighting" & complain about mauling/beating up/fighting in the trenches i'd call "***** ass pussies". Is this a ****ing fighting sport or not? Put on your ****ing pink-ass powderpuff gloves and wack off
Ward would get DQ fighting like that anywhere else than home. Headbutting, clinching, elbowing, pushing then bitching to the ref.
wasnt dirty as much as it was rough. bika always fights that style and he is more borderline dirty than ward ever will be but ward handled it well.
I think most people dislike him because of the way he dominated Kessler. There were no dirty tactics involved with Kessler, he just made Kessler look like the one dimensional fighter that he is, unable to adjust. Ward dominated him from both the inside and the outside, and looked like he was about to quit, and should be thankful that they called the fight on account of his cuts. He would have been TKO'd. In fact Kessler should have another loss against Froch. Fact is, every time Kessler steps up, he gets the **** beat out of him. It happened against Calzaghe, Ward, and Froch. And for the record he looked perfectly fine sitting in the audience watching Froch destroy Abraham. I expected him at least to be wearing some thick ass glasses considering he claims he can't see and has double vision despite having no trouble driving there on his own accord.
Hendo you're getting dumber by the minute. So let me guess Kessler and Green also started the dirty fighting vs Ward too? Lol. Come on man.
