I mean, I've heard nothing from Oscar and his boys since the press tour ages ago.... This just in from the official GBP website: Bernard HOPKINS Philadelphia, PA vs. Joe CALZAGHE Wales, U.K. TBA vs. TBA TBA vs. TBA TBA vs. TBA TBA vs. TBA TBA vs. TBA TBA vs. TBA :: All Bouts are Subject to Change :: http://www.goldenboypromotions.com/schedule/2008/april/4.19.08.htm Absolutely terrible effort from them. At least the Brits sold their allocation of tickets - asked for more, sold them - asked for a few more and sold them.... Just what are Golden Boy taking a cut for exactly? And what are they doing to promote the fight in the US considering it's one of their legends against a cocky upstart?
Its on free HBO, they will have limited advertisement for this non-ppv bout. But I think I have seen the commercials. Plus the HBO crew will announce it over and over in the fights of this weekend.
i saw a billboard on 42nd street here in NY..and one in the train station also...but i havent seen any comercials or anything
Hopkins did GBP's part of the promotion saying he'll never lose to a white boy. That's better than a King Kong-sized fight poster on the Empire State Building or an artificial island created in Dubai with Hopkins surrounded by plastic surgeons.
Someone on their site got lazy. Most of the undercard fights have at least one fighter named.... David Lopez v. Marco Antonio Rubio Bradley Pryce v Norberto Bravo Audley Harrison v TBA Nathan Cleverly v TBA and a bunch of other guys I've never heard of before... Most of the money on the US side comes from the site fee, so it would be a waste of money to promote it too heavily. There are a lot of ads online for it.
you guys make good points, but in general I agree with PrideofWales. It is eerily similiar to the Calz/Kess fight that supposedly did bad #'s on ratings. They did jack **** to promote that fight. The same can be said about Pav/Taylor II, next to nothing for that fight either. It was as if they said: " Well the first fight was really good, so that should promote itself". I agree PrideofWales, this fight even though not PPV, should be in all the ESPN magazines (JT I was, a cool spread in ESPN mag, but not II). It should be in the general publics face all the time.
they don't care about promoting it cause its not PPV but IMO this is a mega-fight that could have sold 350-400K and more if you put it on Sky PPV in the UK
