when haye said this i was shocked, you could see he really doesnt have belief in himself as a hw, he also was saying there is no point him trying to be an alltime great because he doesnt have the opposition to enable him to be great, what bollox....he is a fraud trying to justify his exit from the game. he is only 30 he has plenty of time to become great IF he was as good as he says

 

Haye did question whether he was hard enough though. Everyone questions their ability without hardly ever admitting it, but he questioned whether he was tough enough

 

David Haye is just being humble, and realistic. Lennox Lewis never once used to put himself up, or even entertain the notion of fighting Ali, Frazier or Foreman.

You can simply only beat who's around in you're era.

And the Bottom line is, there is nobody today who David Haye cannot beat.

Yeah I think the key thing is that I dont think he fancies himself at the heavier weight in fights he cannot dictate. You can't question his heart when you see him get off the deck and beat someone like Mormeck but he always felt he held the key advantages in that fight. He's got great talent and knowledge of the fight game, and it's a shame to see him putting himself in the firing line. But after the kind of publicity he generated with his public proclamations he has left himself open to it, and particularly with this retirement stuff when he's only been a heavyweight for 2 mins. Alvarez has had significantly more fights and he's barely 20!

Of course that is a huge ask. You could space those fights over more years were it not for Haye's silly insistence on retiring at 31. I am not saying that is realistic. Greatness is rarely realistic. Was it realistic for Clay to beat Liston, for Ali to beat Foreman, or for Ali to beat Holmes? No. But he tried.

Were Haye to win all these fights, even in a "weak era" he would surely be considered an ATG.

Oh wait. You said 26. Well maybe, just maybe, I'd let this David Haye squeeze Big Aud in there somewhere...

I was just giving an example of how Haye could come under ATG consideration fighting in this era.

Years ago when people said Pacquiao could fight Oscar, and Hatton, and Cotto, and Margarito, and Mosley...they were called crazy and nonsensical. Pacquiao aimed for greatness. Haye doesn't.

 

Pacquiao hasn't fought 26 times in 5 years.
