Just wondering, isn't De la Hoya pretty big to have started as a Super Featherweight?

He didn't hang about at the weight. His 'big thing' when he turned pro was to win titles at 5 weights so he started as low as possible, won a quick title and moved up.

cause he was just a kid back then, just like most fighters who started skinny in their early careers only to grow bigger as time pass

I read somewhere that he was taking advanced weigh-ins to make the limit, courtesy of Bob Arum. Can someone shed light on this

It's just another one of the many bull**** rumors that DLh haters have started. It is 100% unfounded.

DLH only fought at 130 twice. He was very big at the weight. Much like Arturo Gatti. Huge jr. lightweights.

I've never seen any evidence of this.

Top Rank was raided by the FBI a few years ago, with scale-tampering being one of the charges, but I think all of the charges were dropped.

Maybe Jose Luis Castillo was one of the guys who benefited.

It has always been strange how American/Hispanic are (or seem to be) so much better at moving up through weight divisions than European fighters.

If you look at guys like Mayweather, Mosley, DLH etc, all multiple weight world champions, whilst guys like Hatton, Calzaghe, Kessler have fought in the same division from being 18 to now.

Is it because the Americans are pressured into making the lowest division that they can safely, or that Brits/Euros just find their optimum weight and continue fighting accordingly.

For instance, Ricky Hatton was fighting as a lightwelter in the amateurs when he was 16, and still fights there now, without having to struggle (albeit lose lots) to make 10 stone.

Perhaps someone could shed some light on this?

He's good at cutting weight, its not any more complicated than that.
