Kōki Kameda vs. Phongskorn (aka Pongsaklek) Wonjongkam II

The exhibition* "rematch" (Wonjongkam defeated Kameda via majority decision eight years ago for the WBC flyweight title) is taking place in a couple of hours on something called AbemaTV. I probably won't stay up for it, much as it does carry some train-wreck appeal, but just making the public service announcement.

*the JBC refused to sanction this, hence it won't be an official pro bout counting toward either man's record. Just for bragging rights, such as it were.

Apparently if he "avenges" the loss to long-retired Wonjongkam, there is a 10 million JP¥ reward for the semiretired Kameda (that is equivalent to about $92k in United States dollars). I'm not sure about the base purse or bonuses offered to Pong.

Wonjongkam fought a tuneup on April 8th, beating journeyman Manot Comput via UD in an 8-rounder, his first time in the ring since 2013. As of last August the former champ is now in his forties.

32 year old Kameda hasn't competed in a real professional boxing match in 31 months, since he lost to countryman Kōhei Kōno. He fought in at least one previous exhibition match (with headgear) aired live on AbemaTV in 2017, however.

 

Kōki should be getting in the ring in the next few hours but has been Tweeting up a storm.

Eleven messages posted in the last ninety minutes, and dozens in the last 6 hours...including one captioning a weigh-in picture of both of them, heckling Wonjongkam for having such hirsute nipples.

Kōki is one strange dude.

 

I think Kameda is a little beyond the baseline amount of Asian weirdness, though. Cat is OUT THERE.
