So what if he never clinched against any of the journeymen in his first 30-50 matches. Neither did anybody else.

When Wlad start to work with Manny he add clinches to his game, but there is nothing wrong with that, clinches is part of the boxing. If not like that go watch Rocky again and think this is the boxing.
Lennox also use clinches, so what ? He was Great Champion, for me 1 of the greatest, Holy also use clinches so whats wrong with that.
I watch most if not all of Wlad match, and no there is nothing wrong with his style.
Nothing wrong with the clinches as i say there is a few matches, where he use more then normal clinches, because of tactics or so on.
Wlad is a superb boxer, he got extremely powerful and fast punches, he can mix his game, his movement is very good, his cardio is good, and he got perfect sense for distance, his defense is superb also.
And this guy has no lose in the last 10 years, with his chin this is incredible.
Yeah all can say this era is weak, but boxing evolve, there is new methods, training, even supplements and the power and weight of today boxers its hard to stay unbeaten and not get koed for that long.
Also the Chin is granted, you cant make it better, you cant train it, and Wlad not have so good chin, as he say many times, he is not born a fighter he become one. With his not so good Chin, he need to better in every other aspect, and he done that. He is not guilty for not having granite chin like his brother.
That is the reason Vitali not use clinches much. He can get backwards and even if he receive a very hard punch, this is no problem for him, cause he can take it, Wlad cant.
But its not Wlad fault for that, so i dont see nothing wrong.

And for speaking about tactics and chin, Cain Velasquez also not have very good chin, and what he did when he lose to JDS ? He know he cant stand up and win a "beauty", clean boxing fight with Dos Santos, so he use his strengths, he clinches and fight there, also bring match to the ground, tired JDS and the match was over. Same with the second re.
What he do with Cheick Kongo ? He cant take Cheick power and bring the fight to the ground, that what a very good and prepare tactical fighter do. If you not want to accept it, its your problem.
You can hate and downplays Wlad as much as you want, but this will not make him look worse.
In matter of fact, how many guys with his height has such speed ? Such movement, such cardio ? Such technique, such defense ?
P.P. Since Brewster, Wlad have 20 matches, and which in this matches he havily clinches? Povetkin, Mormeck and Peter.
Vs Pianeta the italian goes for clinches, not Wlad.
