Maidana: We’ll have a war here

After confirming that his fight against legend Erik Morales next April 9th at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas is a done deal, Argentinean knockout artist Marcos “El Chino” Maidana made a few comments about it. “I’m very excited to fight again in Las Vegas. And I’m excited to face a warrior like Erik Morales. No matter what some people might say about him not fighting much lately, he’s a legend and you have to respect a legend. Especially if he’s Mexican. Yet, I won’t respect him is when we meet on the ring, of course,” Maidana said. “Erik likes going to war. I like going to war, too. So, guess what? We have a war here. Dont’ expect us to have a verbal war before the bout but a brutal boxing war in the ring on April 9,” he added. “I’m excited to have this new opportunity that Golden Boy Promotions gives me along with Universum Box Promotions and HBO. I won’t disappoint anyone,” El Chino said.

 

I think it might have been a case of Morales looking at what either one will bring to the table in terms of $.

For Maidana, HBO would pay a lot more for that fight, as oppossed to Guerrero, hence more in his pocket at the end of the day.

Not to mention, Maidana won't move from him, Guerrero could run if he wanted too and at this stage of his career (and I admit, as shot as he is!), I don't think 'El Terrible' will want to chase a bunny.

I'm with Ippy, I ****ing love this card and I must say, besides my obvious support for Katsidis against Guerrero on the undercard, I really do hope old Erik can pull one more piece of magic out and blow Maidana off the map.

If he did, boy oh boy, he'd get a massive pay-day to take on Khan!

And the chant goes up "Morales, Morales, Morales!"

I read with interest that Morales vs. Maidana will now be for the WBA 140lbs 'Regular' world title as they have made Maidana 'Super Champion'.

Hence if Maidana win's, he goes back to fundamentally becoming Khan's mandatory which he was before as 'Interim' champion!

If you didn't see it with your own eyes, you truly couldn't believe this WBA multiple belt **** could, seriously?

Agree with everything you've posted. I'm a big fan of El Chino too. It'll be fireworks for however long it lasts. A faded Morales victory over Pacquiao just looks even better as time goes on, doesn't it?

 

Great card all round...however Morales better be in his best condition possible otherwise he will be getting pummelled bad by El Chino.

 

I hope Katsidis wins. Im rootinh for this guy evrytime he fights!!

Katsidis set for Guerrero clash

Feb 11 AAP - Michael Katsidis is poised to fight American two-division world champion Robert Guerrero, in a bout between two boxers whose families experienced adversity outside the ring last year.
The mooted April 9 clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas could be for an interim lightweight world title, according to Katsidis' trainer and manager Brendon Smith.'
"Contracts are expected to be signed over the next few days, but verbally it's as good as done," Smith told AAP.
"We've watched Guerrero ringside, we've watched a lot of him, he's a very, very good fighter.
"It makes for a great fight, but it's a fight Michael can and will win."
Southpaw Guerrero 27 (28-1-1, 18 KOs) is a former IBF featherweight and super featherweight world champion.
His last two wins were over Vicente Escobedo and Joel Casamayor, both of whom have also fought Katsidis, with the latter the first professional to beat the Australian.
The fight takes 30-year-old American-based Queenslander Katsidis (27-3, 22 KOs) back to the venue of his last bout, where he suffered an honourable ninth-round stoppage loss to Mexican superstar and WBO lightweight world champion Juan Manuel Marquez.
Former WBO interim lightweight world champion Katsidis went ahead with that fight just over a month after the death of his brother Stathi.
He was originally scheduled to fight Guerrero last March, but the bout was cancelled as the American tended to his wife Casey, who was afflicted by Leukaemia and underwent a bone marrow transplant..
Speaking on website Boxingtalk.com Guerrero said his wife was cancer-free and they recently celebrated the first anniversary of her transplant.
He was well aware of how tough last year had also been for Katsidis.
"He's had to deal with some tragic situations over the last few months, so I take my hat off to him for hanging in there," Guerrero said.
"I myself had to deal with some adversity with my wife's illness so its been a bumpy road for both of us.
Katsidis hasn't given up hope of fighting Britain's WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan, who had expressed an interest in tackling the Australian before signing to meet Irishman Paul McCloskey in Manchester on April 16.
"Maybe it (a fight with Khan) happens in the future," Smith said.'
"Michael is very keen to bounce back and win his world title back and he'd like to pull in Juan Manuel Marquez again for the rematch."
The April 9 card also features a fight between Mexico's multi-world title-winner Erik Morales and Argentina's Marcos Maidana, who was Khan's most recent victim.
