Its only huge to those who post in boxing forums, but not those who stand at the water cooler at work and pretend to know what they're talking about when boxing is brought up.
You're right, Canelo and GGG are only known on boxing forums  Thank God Luis Ortiz was on the undercard so they could sell out MSG atsch:rofl
More often than not, you mention Canelo Alvarez to a group of guys who like sports and they would know who you're talking about. But mention Genady Golovkin? The response is, "Jennady who?"
I know tons of casual fans that know Golovkin but for the most part dksab. My wife for example hates boxing but posts on her FB whenever GGG wins. This is a big fight right now.
Of what nationality is your wife? The women I know only know of a few boxers, Tyson, Chavez, Delahoya, Marquez, Pacquiao, Mayweather, and Canelo. Mention Genady Golovkin and they'd be clueless. Most of even the Latino women I know wouldn't even know who MAB and Morales were
She is American, I guess she knows of Golovkin because I watch his fights, but he has appeal to even non boxing fans.. I have several friends who only watch the big ppv fights that love Golovkin.. Maybe him being exciting and fighting a lot on regular HBO?
Bet those people you say know of Golovkin didn't care to buy his PPV with Lemieux. Not only that, but the Latino buys are a big chunk of the PPV market, not many know of Golovkin, but let a year or so pass by with a lot of talk of Canelo avoiding Golovkin and all of a sudden there's going to be an interest there in him from that fanbase. Its really going to come down to whether GBP is willing to pay Canelo the guarantee he's going to demand, and believe me to fight Golovkin, Canelo will demand a lot more than he got to fight Cotto. GBP will guage whether the fight at the time can make sufficient enough money where both fighters including the promotion company will make a significant amount of money. If GBP gauges that there isn't enough money in their prognostication numbers, the fight will be put in the back burner and delayed until they believe that the fight is ready to where the buyers will tune in. Only desperate fighters fight for peanuts these days!
