I kind of like this guy. Watched his fight with Brewster today, and while Brewster languished in spots, Meehan fought an excellent fight which I thought he narrowly won. I'm shocked Nady didn't step and stop it in the 8th when Meehan absolutely plastered Brewster over and over with right hands. Followed this loss up with the bad loss to Rahman and has also been k.o.'d by Danny Williams. Meehan doesn't do any one thing particularly well, but he's a rugged, tough guy with lots of heart, good size, and a strong punch. His recent knockout over Williamson was vicious. I'd like to see him get another bigger fight in '08 just for fun. I don't expect world titles or anything, but guys like this are always entertaining, and there's always the chance that age 37 he could pull a Corrie Sanders on some unsuspecting top heavy.
I respect his spirit, but I've always thought he had a glass chin. He doesn't react well to punches, even in the Brewster fight. But I'm happy he's made some scratch at this stage of his career.
I can see where you're coming from, Williams destroyed him and he had no answer for Rahman, although I recall Rahman tagging with some huge shots in the first couple rounds, have only seen that fight once though, as it was happening. His chin held up against Brewster, who did hit him with some shots. Meehan looked badly hurt at the end of a round (10 maybe?), but generally handled Brewster's power as his confidence grew throughout the fight. I wouldn't mind seeing him in with a guy like Tony Thompson. Or how about Chris Arreola? Tye Fields?
He had a nice win over TOS. I wonder if he gets the winner of Golota-Mollo or if he could get a rematch with Brewster, Williams, or Raahman. A revenge win over any of those three couldn't hurt his career. Maybe they could match him up with Tye Fields.
I agree with your feelings about Meehan but the difference between him and Sanders is that Sanders had freakish hand speed and power from the southpaw stance. A very deadly combination, just ask Wladimir Klitschko. Meehan could make a little bit of a run but I have trouble believing he could upset either Chagaev, Klitschko, or Peter. But I think that he could beat a Shannon Briggs, Tua, or maybe even Ibragimov.
Man, his KO punch a split second before the bell nearly took TOS's head off. That may have been the best punch of '07. Its on a popular video post site i won't name. notice how the ref allows the fight to continue even though TOS is clearly done. I guess he quit on his stole.
