Whichever has the best teacher. I have heard great things about KM, but also heard that a lot of guys are trading on the name nowadays and just teach the mix of karate and judo that they know and call it KM.

As for the Kali/Silat stuff, I played around with it but it never really made sense to me. Some people were really into it and thought it was great but nothing I ever learned would ever occur to me to do before any of the regular boxing/kickboxing/judo stuff. It just didn't seem very natural. To me.

That is why I love MMA. It is a complete way of fighting but with you determining the chances of winning. Getting weapons involved and who the **** knows.

Also, moves from Aikido etc wouldn't really work on trained fighters. They wouldn't do silly things like leave their hands out their to be manipulated and they certainly wouldn't let you take complete control of their physicality.

Small joint manipulation, twisting the wrists etc etc does work but your chances of success against Fedor, GSP etc becomes incredibly low.

In the world of martial arts, how highly esteemed is Sifu Cass Magda, who was trained by Dan inasanto?

Does this mean, J23, you regard Krav Maga as far superior self defense to the filipino/Indonesian techniques?

If so, why do you feel so strongly?

Firstly, I wouldn't mention Kali and Silat in such a way that they appear interchangeable.

I am not a fan of Silat, I think too much of it is impractical and ineffectual for real world use, almost as bad as Capoeira(the Brazilian Dancing Martial Art).

With Kali, my understanding is that you will learn knife attack/defense, stick attack/defense and a form of Pinoy boxing called Mano Mano.

A lot of the knife, stick and to a lesser extent the hand techniques are shared, so as to make your learning more instinctual regardless of what weapons or lack thereof you have at your disposal.

As a self-defense system, I have a lot of respect for Kali(aka Escrima, Arnis), but also feel it is more a secondary Martial Art to be learned, if you already have something like boxing or Muay Thai under your belt.

With a lot of the Krav Maga stuff I have seen, I got the impression it works a lot better if you already are skilled in something like Muay Thai or Karate, because they focus more on situational responses, then the learning and refining of techniques.

This.Krav Maga is immediate disablement.Throat Strikes, slams to the temple, disarmanent followed by some nasty shot to somewhere guaranteed to stun. It's effects are immediate because the Israelis do so much CQC that they absolutely need something to kill their attacker if need be and most of the time they need to.

Arnis is filipino muay thai if i recall correctly. Not as foot heavy though.
