14 years, and some great nights and great fights. McGuigan and in particular Fat Mick, take a bow. Then along came the brothers Dim, dumb and dumber. Who knew that a diet of Lyndon Arthur and Harlem Eubank going the distance in non title fights would be just what the TV executives didn’t want. They’ve got form. Their old man promoted on terrestrial tv for years in Germany, in front of huge audiences. These geniuses took the family business to satellite tv and 8 fights later boxing in Germany was pretty much over. Still at least they’ve got Salt Papi’s next fight on Misfits, if that’s still going. Just say no kids.
This is a shame. Channel 5 was good for me personally as my pals who are casual fans, always tuned in to things like WBSS and early Fury fights as their way to dip in and out of it, so we had a few good evenings debating "what a scrap on Five just now" etc. I hope someone picks it up but suspect the ongoing movements in boxing generally kind of put Five at a disadvantage, they'll want 'names' and between DAZN and BBC there's not much left that casuals would recognise.
Two grifter hucksters living off their father’s name. They’d be Purple Bricks Local Property Experts (at best) had it not been for their father. Odious pricks, especially Kalle.
In all my time watching fights, I honestly don't think I can honestly recall a good Channel 5 fight. Maybe the David Price days. I think Eubank-Blackwell was Channel 5 aswell.
Friday night boxing on channel 5 was one of life’s great pleasures. Big Mick did a great job and then the likes of Josh Taylor doing it on Cyclone shows. End of an era.
Sam Eggington v Jkitou a few years ago was one of the best fights I’ve ever seen. Josh Taylor making Ohara Davies quit another great one although I’ve warmed to Ohara since.
Great memory and I'd forgotten that was on Five. Froch used to complain about the TV deals Hennessy had him on - "Saturday afternoon on ITV4 with ads between the rounds" etc. But these channels got far more viewing than Saturday night on Sky ever did. When it came to Froch making big casual money at least people knew who he was.
Well Froch only had the one live fight on ITV. After that Mick tried to turn him in to a PPV attraction separate from the rest of his ITV contract. Sky weren’t interested at that point, so he disappeared in to mainstream obscurity on that Primetime PPV channel for a few years, with the odd fight shown a week later on ITV4. History has been kind to Mick around these parts, but he absolutely killed Froch’s profile over here after the Pascal fight when he could’ve been an absolute star there and then. Three years later, and once Hearn and Sky got on board, his profile shot up almost overnight.
I don't think it's nostalgia to say that Mick knew how to put on a good card. He had Eggington in some stormers and also Alex Dilmaghani's epics.
