It isn't like Gurgel was defenseless. Gurgel was actually just finishing up with a combination of his own and had barely begun to recoil when Noons wound up the shot. The flow of motion began before the bell. Had Gurgel been unable to answer the bell it would have been wrong to disqualify Noons. There was clearly no intent to throw late. If not a TKO, the right call in that instance may have been NC? As for the knee, it was plain that Noons was trying to mercifully finish it ASAP. The stupid ref just gawked while Gurgel splatted like a gull's turd with his eyes rolled back in his head. Noons paused to give him a look like "Dude, WTF are you waiting for?" before following his instincts to simply get it over with. A DQ on the basis of the knee would also have been the wrong call on principle IMO, although there is an argument to be made for it. On a side note, Gurgel has a ton of heart (especially for wanting to continue between rounds). The Gatti comparisons ring true. Had he gone with his areas of expertise and tried more aggressively to shoot, who knows what the match would have looked like? You're right, though. He was out cold after round 1, and it was only a matter of time at that point.
I understand what you mean. Just IMO there is no better fights that Strikeforce can make then a trilogy of Thomson-Melendez and a Diaz-Noons rematch theres 2 much history between both of these pairs to not make them while the time is right.
What is the rule in MMA? If it had been boxing he would have been DQed Right or wrong. My view is the guys corner shouldn't have let him go out.
For which? Certainly the punch after the bell would not have resulted in a DQ in boxing. It would be viewed as atrocious officiating if it were, and people would scream bloody murder. The key factor in those calls is flagrance, and that was not a flagrant after the bell shot. As has been stated, it was delivered before but landed after. There was no opportunity for him to withhold it. If you mean the knee - well, that doesn't really apply as knees are never legal in any circumstances in boxing. In MMA knees are almost always legal standing, and are sometimes legal on a grounded opponent, and sometimes not depending on the promotion. It was an illegal blow but the point is that Gurgel had already been KTFO at that point. The fight was over. Noons was just trying to put a punctuation mark so that the beating wouldn't be prolonged as the ref seemed to be allowing it to. It would be horrendous to disqualify someone for honorable intentions like that.
I have been a KJ fan for a while. He has some of the most successful boxing in MMA. I love how he consistently works the body. I would love to see a Diaz rematch.
I'm the same as you in regards to prefering the striking aspect by far compared to the other aspects, although BJJ is growing on me increasingly. So I suppose it is quite strange that I'm not even a little bit if a fan of his. Meh. Rafael Cavalcante though! That guy has some brutal Muay Thai skills. Definitely made me sit up and take notice. I had kind of written him off after the loss to Kyle but he proved himself there. Beastly!!
KJ is a PERFECT example of boxing technique in MMA. Matter of fact id go so far as to say he's boxing technique may be the best in MMA. He has excellent hands and completely tooled Gurgel. Gurgel should have stuck to what he does best which is BJJ rather than be macho and stand with a striker like KJ.
KJ's not flawless technically as a boxer but his experience allows him to implement skills that other fighters can't. The way he counters, goes to the body etc
I never said he was flawless. But he's technique is perfect for MMA. How many times do you see MMA fighters go to the body? Let alone even do it properly when punching? How many times do you see guys throw the over hand right and then come back up with the counter left hook? It just doesnt happen in MMA. Its very rare. KJ has a pro boxing background. As far as im concerned he implements this VERY well in MMA.
Well that's just it, Gurgel has been trying to proove his standup in his last bunch of fights and the results have spoke for themselves. Then to try to stand with a guy like noons just shows he has become dilusional. He needs to get some wins at this point. Noons-Diaz 2 is looking not to bad now.
Lawal did the same thing. Thats why he also got KO'ed. He should have been trying to get Feijao to the mat and tool him with elbows and GnP. Instead he tried to stand with a known banger.
I made a thread not too long ago about the evolution of MMA. One of the evolutions, along with dynamic kicking, was body punching and combos. Melendez, Noons, JDS and numerous others are beginning to employ body punching and combos to a high level. Boxing fans used to complain how these guys couldn't box but their hands are evolving technically and skillfully. Noons is definitely proof that MMA is still evolving in numerous areas. Its great to see.
True. He threw some painful ones. When you have wrestlers throwing body shots then it shows you how MMA is evolving to become even more dynamic than before. Its not that these guys can't throw body shots, they always could but now they do it in the ring and not just in training. Its happening on all facets of the game. You got guys like Jones doing more dynamic throws; guys like GSP and Le doing more dynamic kicks and you got guys like JDS and Noons showing more dynamic hands.
This past weekend showed how unprofessional KJ Noons really is. He didn't make weight. He struck after the bell. Then he struck a grounded opponent with a knee. Any kind of title shots this guy is supposedly in contention for should be non-existent as of last night. He doesn't deserve a shot at Melendez or Diaz. People can talk about how talented he is all they want. His inability to make weight then break 2 rules during the fight proved STRIKEFARCE is on its way to becoming the 2nd coming of Elitexc. Gurgel said it best in his post fight interview when he said he doubts he'd get a rematch because Noons is their "goldenboy." And its almost as if what Noons did got swept under the rug. I think Mauro Ranallo was the only one that really made a case for Gurgel while on the air. I almost can't wait for the day Strikefarce folds, and I most certainly can't wait for Noons to get Krazy Horsed by someone again. And he can't beat Thompson, Melendez, or Diaz in a rematch.
