On January 10th, unbeaten WBO SMW champ Denis Inkin will fight unbeaten stablemate Karoly Balzsay. This could be labeled as 'the Universum final', since after many SMW's of the German stable fell out (Sartison beaten, Veit is over the hill, Brahmer beaten at 175, they) are the ones left - and both pack the punch and the skill level, to compete on the championship level. I expect the winner to participate in a unification fight in 2009, maybe leave Germany (Inkin is Russian, Balzsay is Hungarian, neither one is very popular in the German market, so go for the international market seems more logical than protecting the winner in untelevised undercard like Dzinziruk) or have a unification vs. Kessler in Germany or Denmark.

Of course Inkin beat Zuniga back in November in a close fight (unlike the internet rumors, it wasn't controversial, just closer than the scores would suggest). Balzsay, a southpaw, is facing his biggest threat to date. Both have a very decent punch, Inkin beats you up more while Balzsay has a knockout punch. Both fight in the European fighting style, Inkin is based on the Russian school, Balzsay follows the German school more or less, so we should expect a skillful boxing match more than a street brawl, but can also expect big punches landing. The chin could turn out to be the deciding factor, although Balzsay's overall skill level is slightly better.

It's an excellent start for the busiest category today, the Super Middleweigh division!

It's on the undercard of Erdei-Barashian which will be broadcasted live on German ZDF at 22:00CET. The top undercard fight's idiotic edited/shortened version is usually broadcasted after the usual idiotic sport hour at 23:00CET, so the fight or the clips of the fight will be broadcasted at around midnight CET.

I had a look at Balzsay. He looks fundamentally correct. He could do with using the southpaw jab to his advantage a little more, he neglects it and allows his opponent in close. That could really be useful for him against a boxer like Inkin who is very orthodox, but he's not doing it.

I have a little feeling his KO record might be an illusion. For most of the time he does not really commit his body to punches. He caught Clavero with a beautiful right hook right on the button and he goes down with a delayed reaction. This sort of told me more about his past opponents than Balzsay's power.

Anyway, should make for a good fight but I'd be surprised if Inkin is as fragile. I think Inkin should get the better of this in a tactical long range fight with a more consistent jab, and his overall experience.

    Good luck with that.

Unification hasn't happened since Michalczewski for Universum, if I recall.

This fight is now officially the main event for tonight's Universum card as Erdei's opponent, Barashian failed to make weight. Their fight will go on as the main support in a non-title fight, and Inkin-Balzsay will be the televised main event, which was the better fight anyway.

German ZDF will broadcast, I don't have info on any other TV station or internet source, but who knows.

I'm still struggling to make a confident prediction on this one. I like Balzsay, he looks reasonable. He seems to have the southpaw style to hs advantage, as well as being a taller longer fighter. That could be crucial against a technical fighter like Inkin.

But Inkin has better experience, better fundamentals.
