I tend to agree and disagree with this Ippy.

Without going into specifics, if Kats had beaten Diaz, he'd have become IBO Lightweight champion (which I know isn't top draw), but would have kept his name marquee due to winning.

As it was, he had to then go the Philippines to take a re-building fight. If you look at the dates on BoxRec, it was a month before JMM fought for the vacant WBO Lightweight title. Surely there's a case/merit to say that had Kat's been successful against Diaz, (who was a touted fighter at that stage) he would of been open to getting the WBO shot before JMM?

I agree with you 100% that Kat's career path was always destined to face JMM, however looking at the dates of the bouts, if he had beaten Diaz in late 08' (Sept. off memory), he could have quite easily in my opinion staked first claim for the vacant title opportunity in early 09'.

It's all conjecture now, but surely you as a manager would acknowledge that you'd rather your fighter winning which open's up far, far more options than losing and having to re-build again. Further, surely if he beats Diaz, as a winning fighter, his money is far better in future fight negotiations I would have thought?

As it stood, that was Kat's 2nd loss in a row and you can't tell me promoters don't start to question. If it hadn't de-valued him, why was he in the Philippines?

    Agree with these thoughts.:good

I wouldn't get rid of Brendon Smith at all...simply get another trainer with more experience at the top level to maybe offer Katsidis some different gameplans & advise. Keep with Smith as the 2nd assistant.
With the right top level trainer it would improve Smith's training also leading to him im sure taking on many more prospects within Australia over the coming years.

Yeh hard one Kegs. I see what you mean but I also see that obviously Michael responds to Brendan and they are very close. And as there is so much water under the bridge with the pair, how does Brendan take to a No.2 type position? I do see your points though and they have merit.

It's the old saying - 'one fight can change everything' and this I believe could have definitely rung true for Kat's had he beaten Diaz. We can all debate about the corner work etc, etc, but it happened and it's done.

If Kat's had first crack at the WBO Lightweight world title (and won of course) he wouldn't have had to run around for the last 2yrs calling our JMM all the time and as a full champion (not the interim rubbish), there would have been a lot more at the table for Kats in a unification with JMM.

As I said earlier, it's all problematical now and it is what it is.

It's all much in a muchness for mine. He beats Diaz, and it leads straight to Marquez, which he loses. He caught Diaz at a time when he was hot. I don't think that version of Katsidis can beat Juan with anyone in his corner.

I'm not really into all this "replacing Brendan" talk and I'm not saying you are either. For starters, it just won't happen, so it is kinda pointless. People say he should go train with Freddie Roach... he'd be fourth in line there.

I agree Ipp with your 'replacing Brendan' comments. Won't happen, dead argument. I agree also, that I don't care who's in Kat's corner, Freddie Roach, anyone, he ain't never going to be beating JMM.

All I was trying to say was, if he got to that title first by beating Diaz, things could have played out a whole host different just due to having options. Your fighter winning opens up so many doors quickly. Getting beat don't give you no options but hard ****ing graft back!
