MICHAEL Katsidis's long-awaited Texan shootout is in jeopardy as former world boxing champ Juan Diaz refuses to fight the Toowoomba slugger in a dispute over boxing gloves. Diaz and Katsidis, both ex-world champs, are due to collide in Diaz's home town of Houston, Texas on September 6 but the fight has been thrown into doubt because the heavy-hitting Katsidis wants to wear the Mexican brand ``Reyes'' traditionally favoured by sluggers. ``Michael's a big puncher and obviously Diaz is worried about him wearing a puncher's gloves,'' Katsidis's trainer Brendon Smith told The Courier-Mail newspaper from Los Angeles yesterday. ``This is the third time Michael and Diaz have been due to fight and it's a major pay-per-view event on (telecaster) HBO so we don't want any slip-ups.''??? (Didnt know this was a PPV) Katsidis and Diaz suffered their first losses in their previous fights in major upsets. Diaz lost his three world lightweight crowns when outpointed by Nate Campbell, an American who was twice knocked out by Brisbane's Robbie Peden. Katsidis was sensationally stopped by Olympic gold medallist Joel Casamayor when he appeared poised for victory. He says he wants to beat Diaz and then challenge Manny Pacquiao, the new WBC lightweight champ.
That's what I saw on an article about 2 weeks back. The promoter said they will wear the brand of gloves they wanted to wear. Bottom line . . . Diaz cannot dictate what the other side is gonna use.
Because Cleto Reyes are preferred by most puncher's. It has something to do with the way the padding is distributed. Manny Pacquiao claimed him being forced to wear Winning Gloves in his first fight with Erik Morales effected his punching power.
A part of me does'nt want this fight to happen because I think it can be bigger if both fighters get on a small win streak then fight.
Well that is the rules now . . . not unless it is specifically stipulated in the contract . . . if it's not . . . this is gonna sound like Juan Diaz doesn't really want the fight.
Wait . . . peeps . . . I'm gonna search for that article that says no problem with the gloves issue. It may take time . . . because that was about 2 weeks ago. I'll come back once I find it.
Is there REALLY a difference between the gloves? On fight night they have to be of the same weight so I don't see where their would be a difference except maybe one logo might look cooler then the other.
