Amir Khan will not take on Michael Katsidis because the fight represents too much of a risk, according to Katsidis' trainer Brendon Smith.

Katsidis was too good for the previously unbeaten Kevin Mitchell in his most recent fight, at Upton Park on May 15.

After giving such an impressive performance on English soil, Katsidis was mooted as a potential future opponent for WBA light-welterweight champion Khan.

However, Smith does not believe that Khan - whose brittle chin is thought to be a major weakness - will be willing to face off against the hard-hitting Australian.

"I really don't see it happening," he said. This is a very risky fight for Amir and one they would not take at this stage."

Also on May 15, Khan stopped Paulie Malignaggi in the 11th round of what was his first fight in America. Smith has revealed that Katsidis, the WBO interim lightweight king, was considered as an opponent for Khan before they settled on the Malignaggi clash.

"There was an opportunity for the two to fight in Amir's US debut, but it was turned by Freddie Roach [Khan's trainer] and instead Paulie Malignaggi was chosen," he said.

There is nothing to suggest that Roach has changed his mind in the intervening period - although Khan remains keen to fight in England during July.

hmmmmm so it isnt ruled out, they just dont expect khan to want to go through with it?

personally i think kats would murder khan after 11 hard rounds

Even though I'd rather Khan fight a 140-pounder, he did start at 135, and Kat is a big 135-er. This really could end up being an interesting fight.

Katsidis can always go to 140 if he wants to get a big payday.

Mhmm. Although he's got a better chance at a title at 135, imo. He might match up well with Marquez if Marquez isn't too shot to take Diaz again.

I don't believe that at all. That doesn't even make sense.

First Katsidis' camp was saying that Katsidis is interested in the winner of Diaz-Marquez and that the fight with Khan would only happen if the reward (money) was good. Why is he saying that the Khan camp won't take this risk when he has already admitted that Schaefer has contacted him? He seems to be saying contradictory things. I think it is because they are trying to get as much money as possible.

i think kats is also too tough at the moment for khan to take on. everybody can moan about his size, but he's a very big lightweight, and he can punch, he can cut the ring down, and he can throw alot of punches aswell as take a good punch. tough fight.

Katsidis hasn't exactly got an iron chin himself.

it's not amazing, it's not too bad either. obviously khan can break it if he lands cleanly throughout the fight.

So let me get this right....Khan’s team want Katsidis and offer him fight, but Katsidis’ trainer rejects this by claiming Khan’s lot want no part of him. That doesn’t really make any sense.

I’m beginning to think that much like Marquez’s team were worried about facing the bigger Khan, these guys (Team Katsidis) are too. But unlike Marquez, Katsidis is a big 135 fighter himself, and wouldn’t have a problem campaigning at 140 as he’s been there before. I can’t see why him and his team would refuse this massive opportunity. Khan’s a big young name, and a win over him will certainly draw more adulation than a win over JMM/Diaz.

    Take it Katsidis!

I bet you're the exact type who would say "the cherry picker is fighting a smaller fighter" if he did fight Katsidis.

Can't blame Katsidis' trainer, he knows full well that Khan is going to be a popular target and he's trying to get his foot in the door first.

Doesn't mean it'll happen, you can't fight everyone at once, but got to get that foot in there.

Khan will smoke Katsidis so haters beware before you say that he's ducking him.

also, why would Khan fight an Australian fighter in his American debut?
