Hi, as the thread suggests i keep injuring my thumb. Been boxing for a month or so and just started body sparring. Every time i spar i end up with the same thumb njury, its a sickening pain that means i struggle to continue and have to miss a session. Am i Doin something wrong? I think its happening when my shots are being blocked by a forearm or elbow.

    Thanks.

the best thing I could suggest is to try and wrap your hands differeently, or maybe just a little tighter round your thumb :good

Thanks matty. Reckon i need to keep it tucked in too. Its just tricky to be conscious of it with all the other stuff you need to remember!

A few things...First, you aren't making a proper fist. Roll you fingers into your palm and get that thumb underneath. Second, you aren't punching properly. Why is your thumb getting involved when he blocks a punch with his forearm? Third, you aren't wrapping your hands correctly. You need to wrap the thumb, but it goes beyond that. Sometimes guys will make so many wraps around the knuckles, trying to protect the, that they can't make a proper fist. You want your wrap to secure your wrist, keep the bones in the back of your hand tight, and your thumb in place. Finally, the modern thumb attached gloves put the thumb in an awkward and bad place and I'm amazed that there aren't way, way more thumb injuries.

what the guy above said. When you throw a hook remember to shift your hand so that the thumb is facing upwards not inwards towards you. If its facing inwards you have a bigger chance of landing a punch with your thumb and you can damage it. Also wrapping may be wrong. Now if you ****ed it up once you might have sprained it how long do the pains last and is your thumb a bit swollen? if so you might have to lay off from using that hand for a few weeks for the sprain to disapear.
