PUNCHING POWER: Edge GARCIA: "Danny can punch with both hands. He does load up, so you can't be right there in front of him." PHYSICAL STRENGTH: Edge PORTER: "Shawn is clearly the more physical fighter." DEFENSE: Edge GARCIA: "Porter's defense is his offense. With Danny, I've never seen anyone so willing to just stare at me without throwing a punch. He's committed to being second, a pure counterpuncher." SPEED: Edge PORTER: "Shawn is faster and a little more athletic. He'll triple on the jab to get inside and use stutter-steps. Danny's real relaxed, but that doesn't necessarily come through in his hand speed." BOXING ABILITY: Edge GARCIA: "Neither one is known for boxing. Danny's a counterpuncher, and Shawn outworks you. Danny has nice boxing movement when he wants to be evasive. He's underrated when on his back foot. We saw that against (Lucas) Matthysse and (Brandon) Rios." RING IQ: EVEN: "Hard to judge. These are two world champions with tremendous amateur pedigrees." CHIN: EVEN: "In my fights, Porter took more big punches than Garcia did. I had to hit hard to keep Porter off me. They both have enough power to hurt each other." PREDICTION: "This is one of the best matchups of the year. I try not to overthink it. It's Porter by decision or Garcia only by KO. I lean toward PORTER." The champ has spoken
If Peterson and a shot Guerrero, who at that point, chins were starting to deteriorate can take his power flush, so can Porter, who even thought it may not seem like it, in actuality is a little harder to hit clean than either of them.
IDK I think they both have different types of defense (or lack thereof). For instance, Porter comes inside basically in a straight line. He was getting timed by Thurman in their fight (while Brook IMO illegally tied him up). Porter doesn't have Loma's type of defense where he comes in at angles and has excellent upper body movement. On the other hand, Garcia doesn't really move his head or feet much. Give Garcia some lateral movement and he is in trouble. Come straight at him and you're the one who might be in trouble. That is what makes this fight interesting and I agree with Thurman's assessment, although I think Garcia will hurt Porter maybe score a KD and that'll tilt the decision in his favor; I do believe he could also knockout Porter although I wouldn't bet on it.
Garcia doesn't have Brook's power/timing/size/footwork etc etc etc to beat Porter imo. I just can't see Garcia maintaining the work rate he will need to win this fight.
I always thought Porter had a better inside game compared to Garcia which will play a factor in this fight. So I'm leaning towards Porter. I can't think of too many fights where Garcia displayed a great inside game. Like in his last fight with Rios, I wasnt impressed with his game.
Porter showed against Brook that you can't control him for 12 rounds....At times you have to dig in and match him on the inside. As Garcia is significantly smaller the Brook on fight night, and is weaker in virtually every aspect compared to Kell, I can't see how Garcia can get to him unless Porter isn't as awkward, and has a reduced work rate than he once was.
