KELL BROOK has landed a crack at middleweight star Gennady Golovkin. The IBF welterweight champion will jump up to middleweight to take on the WBA, IBF and WBA title holder at the 02 on September 10. Ring king Golovkin looked set to face Brooks compatriot Chris Eubank Jr. But the Brighton-based brawler did not sign the contract for the fight on time so Brook stepped in. The Sheffield fighter told promoter Eddie Hearn he was interested in the fight and in less than 48 hours the bout was on. Unbeaten Brook, 30, said: This is the fight and the moment I have been waiting for for some time. Weve tried and tried to lure the best to come and fight me and now weve got the best of the best the number one pound for pound fighter in the world is coming to the UK. When this fight got offered to me I accepted within minutes and I cant wait. Everyone knows Im a huge welterweight and I know I will carry my speed and accuracy and even more power through the weights. This is the ultimate fight, one of the biggest international fights the country has seen in many years - you have seen some huge names run from Golovkin but Im running to him. Im a special fighter and I will show the world on September 10. Brook was due to defend his IBF welterweight title against WBO champion Jessie Vargas in the autumn. The American had signed for the fight but the deal fell apart after the pound crashed following Britains vote to leave the European Union which meant the finances did not match up. But Brook who has not lost in 36 professional fights will retain his IBF welterweight title no matter what the outcome of his clash with Golovkin at middleweight. Eubank Jr was furious when the news was revealed that Brook had got the fight. He posted on Twitter: I havent been shown one contract since my fight with Golovkin was announced. Im still ready and waiting to sign. Fighting Brook is a joke. But it is understood that Eubank Jrs team were shown a contract and did not sign it. They are believed to have been unhappy with the purse that their man would receive. Hearn who promoted both fighters said: I couldnt be happier for Kell. We have pushed for that big name for a long time with many reluctant to step into the ring with him and now this is the ultimate challenge. This is the biggest fight of 2016 and I cant tell you how happy I am to bring it to the UK.
Brook has a set that's for sure not sure he can do a Hopkins though as GGG is probably in better form than Tarver was and Tarver had to shed weight from being in Rocky movie in 2006. Jumping 2 weight divisions to fight a powerpuncher like GGG is pretty gutsy.
Wait a minute, is this really the reason given for the Vargas fight not happening? Youre telling me that if Britain didnt vote to leave the EU Brook would be fighting Vargas??? The pound crashed and the finances didnt matchup, and thats why Kell isnt fighting Jesse? Really? Youve got to be freaking kidding me that thats the actual reason.
It's *****y health wise. Business wise - if he wins - can you imagine how big he becomes. I think he jumps to top 5 cash cows in boxing.
Do you actually read anything? Do you actually speak to people involved in boxing? Even on Twitter? You have embarrassed yourself by suggesting Golovkin/Jr/Brook all happened in 24 hours and you have also embarrassed yourself by suggesting Golovkin ducked a potential voluntary defence. Hearn said himself he has to increase his offer to Vargas because of the drop in value of the pound. I'm not suggesting that's the main reason the fight never happened but Hearn has said he did have to increase the offer. Why haven't you heard about this? Do you only get your boxing news from some of the trolls on these boards?
Thats not what Im saying. Im saying its fascinating to think that had the U.K. not left the EU, that Brook could be fighting Vargas instead of Golovkin. I didnt suggest that Golovkin/Jr/Brook happened in 24 hours, I said one day Golovkin made an offer to Eubank and the next day to everyones surprise we learn hes fighting Brook instead. I didnt say Golovkin ducked a potential voluntary defense either. Thats what you said. Though it certainly could be considered a duck Fighting a welterweight instead of a MW isnt exactly a good look for the MW champ.
It would be massive if he wins but that's highly doubtful. I hope he doesn't get too badly wrecked if he loses and can go back down in weight and perform as well as he does now at WW afterwards.
