I just checked an article out, apparently, the data is from the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board aka BARB, which is part-owned by Sky. Conveniently enough, it doesn't have the list as displayed on its website and search results on the site bring back nothing about boxing.

If Sky are faking the figures why are they making some of the shows they showed look worse than they presumably were?

I think they're largely realistic. You have to consider promotion for these fights. Froch had been hidden away for years - the Kessler fight first time round was on Primetime. Taylor wasn't even on live television. The first Groves fight was seen as a mismatch. Hearn promoted the rematch to death.

Also, PPV's are easier these days. You literally just push a button. Easier process than calling up with your card.

 

Tony I've taken you off ignore purely on the basis of you being one of the few fans who saw the Fury Wilder fight for what it really was.

On the subject at hand, I have no desire to enter into a polemic with you on this, other than to say I'd like to see a source that isn't from somewhere part-owned by Sky.

 

Show me a figure and I will make it look like anything...

More watch through non PPV methods than those who buy PPV - the crowd outside my neighbour's window was into 3 figures

 

Froch-Kessler was the first PPV after the hiatus caused by the epic Wlad/Haye mess up so a low buy rate was to be expected.

 

Tony's posts are becoming more balanced and objective I have to say - had him down as Eh Day's arris cleaner in the early days.

 

Like all the BARB figures, they do need a bit of context and sense-checking to make sure they are somewhat reliable.

Taking Froch-Kessler II as an example, there were a reported 32,000 viewers for Sky Box Office Events in the week the fight took place. There were however 348,000 viewers for Sky Box Office Movies during the same period, which is 150,000-200,000 higher than any other week for that channel around that time.

Where there is a surprisingly low figure for the channel on which the fight was presumably aired, along with a spike in viewing figures for an associated channel, it's not a major leap to conclude that the two may well be linked.

Likewise, the shockingly low figure for Froch-Groves I coincided with a whopping 384,000 people deciding to have a night in and watch a movie instead; this was more than the number who did the same in the weeks either side combined.

The BARB figures are a useful guide IF the viewing figures are picking the people who bought the fight, and IF there were no other events on that same week (eg WWE PPVs). Unfortunately when the figures are circulated, it's rare that any of this is actually checked.

 

Wouldn't it be great if after every 'I knocked out George Groves in front of 80,000 people' the interviewer interjected with 'and got a gift from Howard Foster seen in 47,000 homes'?

 

Whoever put the article together has either used the info from the BARB weekly viewing figures (https://www.barb.co.uk/viewing-data/weekly-viewing-summary/), or plucked it from another article that did the same. The BARB figures don't give PPV buys, but they give estimated viewing figures for Box Office channels during the week the fight took place, which can (subject to there being no anomalies) give a reasonably accurate guide to the number of buys.

Unfortunately, there often are plenty of anomalies with the figures, so it can easily turn into fake news.

 

Off subject but I could swear I stayed up and watched the Taylor fight live? Remember being stunned when he sparked him in the final seconds.
