British boxing is in a bad state atm if this is a head line fight. Am I right in thinking there is only a single British title holder atm??
You're wrong. Froch & Quigg. DeGale and Rose in line for shots next (at least, in theory, both having 'earned' them...) so the number could double.
Yeah. I don't count Quigg. Rigondeaux is the WBA champ. DeGale and Rose have earned their shot though. What the hell is a WBC emeritus champ? I thought fighters only got this when they retired like Vitali, but Ward is one and he's active. Does that mean he can challange the WBC champ at any time?
Awkward opponent, negative as hell...very clever in the ring. He can't really punch and he won't have any single outstanding quality to leave Quigg dazzled...but he is just quietly, annoyingly effective and will probably make it surprisingly close even should he lose. His best achievement on paper is twice beating Cristian Mijares, but those were both robberies. His next best after that is the upset of previously unbeaten Escandon he is coming fresh off this past summer - but that decision too was a bit controversial. Even so, he caused both Mijares & Escandon to look a bit ****, as well as the rest of the many world class types he fought over the years. To convincingly thwart him is a big enough ask for Quigg, let alone the miracle of managing to have it not be ugly to watch.
I disagree with the consensus of this thread, from what I can see Brook has had quite a lot of bad luck of late. Injuries to both Kell and Devon Alexander ruled that fight off, then Alexander lost his title to Porter, who can make a voluntary defense, which will not be Brook. Considering that, last year was one of Brook's best, considering the way in which he dealt with Senchenko and Carson Jones second time around. The biggest British welterweight fight that can be made isn't happening because Amir Khan would prefer to take a different direction. Not pointing fingers, it's simply the case. Brook has often publicly stated he would like that fight. I won't apologise for the Robles fight. Clearly a ****-poor piece of matchmaking, but again, what is Kell Brook to do about that?
Brook's best year was 2011. Old Lovemore & old Magic Matt > Senchenko. Don't let the Ricky KO fool you, or the fact he once held a belt. Absolute tripe, among the lowest quality paper champs in recent memory.
:good Hence why I said 'one of'. Looking back, opponents-wise Kell was on the same ladder as Canelo, until Canelo went and fought Trout and Mayweather, while Kell got injured, fights got postponed, cancelled, titles changed hands and he's still waiting his turn.
:nod Up to around then, yes, they were on the same trajectory. Shocking what difference a couple of years can make; Alvarez now an internationally recognized star and Brook still virtually unknown outside his country (and hell, let's be honest, barely known even within it...)
if Kell doesn't get that world title shot in his next fight, put a fork in him. he's done. i know it's not his fault what with the injuries and all, but it has got to a ridiculous stage where it's becoming something of a joke. and it's a shame, because he does have the ability to do good things at Welter.
Totally agree,Witter was badly managed,by the time he eventually became world champ he had slipped a tiny bit,the witter of 2003/2004 was very good..
