I dont even think I SAW the "smart" part before, to be honest, haha.. Either way, dude has one loss to one of the best of our era, I dont think hes underrated, or overrated, hes looked at just as he should be in general... I also think Abraham would win in a fight between the two by KO. I also agree on another thing, JT giving him trouble, because I thought he nearly won the rematch.
Pavlik was probably a bit over-rated before the B-Hop fight, but now he's probably under-rated. The popular myth about Pavlik is that he's a basic, one-dimensional plodder with little or no boxing skills and has been able to build a reputation on the back of putting the hurt on a string of chumps. That's really not true. Obviously, Pavlik's not the most defensively slick boxer. Apart from that, he doesn't have any major weaknesses. His hand-speed is perfectly good, for starters - in fact, he has a lot more hand-speed than he's given credit for; since he likes to sit down on single punches rather than throw flurries it gives the (false) impression that he's slow. And if you look at his earlier fights, it's clear that he has the ability to mix punches up: body shots, hooks and uppercuts galore. In the JT fights, there simply wasn't the need for him to do much other than throw the jab and follow with a straight right. In the second, he proved he could box at the top level as well as slug his way - his work rate was certainly a factor, but he didn't just turn up the heat wildly like Froch. His record, too, shows decent pedigree. You can't ask for much more than 35-1, beating everyone in his way on the road to the top, and convincingly so (32 KOs?). For sure, the B-Hop fight showed that he can be beaten by someone who throws hard combinations and then rapidly moves out of range and avoids getting pinned down. But facts are facts: his performance alone showed he wasn't in top shape that night, and most of the time he spent floating around in the middle of the ring applying zero pressure with his jab notably absent. As far as I'm concerned, if and when the AA fight finally happens, the haters will subside and Pavlik will be back on his way to recognition as a top fighter and the legit best MW in the world.
Taylor's main problem was swapping Pat Burns for Manny. He was progressing along fine with Pat and didn't need to switch. I'm a big Taylor fan and I've had a bad taste in my mouth ever since that switch was announced...:verysad IMHO Taylor would still be undefeated, if he had kept Burns in his corner.
Pavlik is not overrated. I dont think anyone built him up to be something he wasn't. I agree he probably got more attention threw being white, aggressive and for being from Youngstown.
The funny thing about calling KP over rated is that even his most ardent fans here on ESB were talking about strategies that would beat him way back in 2007! We've always seen him for what he is: A heavy handed pressure fighter with a high work rate, good fundamentals, and a very good chin. I'm the biggest Pavlik nuthugger on ESB, and yet I've often said that in a lot of ways he reminds me of a giant Danny Lopez. Is it over rating him to compare him with "Little Red?" I think not.
Damn it Boo! I was havin' a decent evening, then you HAD to bring up the fact you gave B-Hop the plan to beat Kelly....ALL OUT IN PUBLIC and ****.:deal Still mad at you Boo!:bart
I guess I should be glad you are putting in some long hours, at least based on your posting times. That or the kid is in little league?
Yeah, it blew my mind to see him take such a one-sided beating like that and not only keep coming forward, but not even look fazed! Kelly had the look that he still believed he could win, and he did have his moments. If that kind of a beating can't break Pavlik then he really is a monster. I hope he cleans house soon and moves to 168. A lot of people forget that Pavlik wasn't really any bigger for the Hopkins fight and Hopkins was clearly an easy 180 of hard muscle. It's not like he was some out-of-shape old man.
I honestly don't think Pavlik is overrated at all, he lost to hopkins.. come on now how can you take any shame in that? **** happens, hopkins lost his pro debut... it's not about losing my friend it's about how you deal with that loss
I'm glad you have given up on the PW fight finally. Sorry, couldn't help myself on that one. I'm trading the dangerous task of beer and chainsaw for the more dangerous beer and keyboard. Back to the tree...... sigh..... groan.....
