From an economic perspective there might be bigger fights at 160, but from a fan perspective the more interesting fights are at 168. I think at 160 Pavlik looks a little undefined because he's so dry. At 168 I think he'll look healthier, move better, and perform better. I also think he'll do pretty well against the likes of Greene, Froch, or Abraham. I think Greene is a good fight in order to step up to the weight.
there are some things kelly can do better...some things he can do much better. big mike was getting a little frustrated with the current situation which was documented in a vindy article, as was cam dunkin. but the weight and scenery are almost as big a deal as his flaws. and steward, while he has had success with straight up and down guys, would probably not gel well w/ kelly. i say that b/c steward spent a good deal of time in the lead up to the taylor fight laughing at kelly in public. for a guy who is usually reserved even when he's talking smack, steward was especially outspoken about how little he thought of kelly.
And Steward has continued in that vein to this very day. Emmanuel Steward would be the worst possible choice. I'm pretty skeptical about KP's ability to stay at 160. However, the fact that he is entering camp lighter than he typically did in 2006-2007 is a good sign. As we all know, the middleweight division is heating up fast. If KP stays at 160 he won't have the same dead division to deal with. I really like the idea of Pavlik, Sturm, and Pirog battling it out while Williams and Martinez conclude their unfinished business. After that the two guys who emerge on top would hopefully put on a mega-fight for all the marbles.
i agree, boo. seeing how kelly seemed to be intially intent on moving up and arum wanted him to stay...this seems to be an olive branch of sorts from cam, kelly and jack to arum since dunkin seemed so outraged over how TR was handling kelly. "ok bob, we'll try 164 and see how we feel...we feel good then we'll talk mw again." but even kelly pointed out in the latest vindy article that the last 4lbs is the hardest for him to get off so even if he feels good at 164...that may not necessarily be a good barometer of how he would still feel at 160.
As you know, Top Rank and Dunkin put a lot of pressure on KP to stay at 160, but Pav refused to commit to the idea. Cutting weight is not always an advantage. There is more to be said for staying in shape between fights. Look at Froch; he walks around at about 172, and is in really good shape at 168. At 160 he'd be dead in the water! I'd love to see some current pics of Pavlik. I have a suspicion that he's already in great shape, and may be in the same boat Froch is in. Entering camp at 173 does not mean a thing unless there is some fat to lose. If the body fat content is at 6-8%, you can't lose much and stay healthy.
Four pounds [at 164] makes a huge difference, a huge, major, major difference, said Pavlik. Four pounds is a matter of a whole night and morning of still [having to work out] before a fight. That weight also allows him to keep one toe at middleweight with the other at super middleweight. Hes open to staying at 160, particularly if he gets a title shot, but only if he can do it the right way, with a nutritionist." from that clip it sounds like they arent sure what will happen when they get back down there either.
It's good he has his weight down, but he still has the same trainer. So there is only so far he can go.
hes been shown up at the very top by hopkins (the catchweight had an effect but come on he got schooled) and sergio , i like him i think he a decent fighter and a decnt guy but some of you are very deluded as to his skills
KP time is up. He would get owned by Pirog and Martinez at 160lb and would get blown out of the water at 168lb by BUTE and CO.
who is bute and co? i think he would beat bika, green, steiglitz, froch, kessler (yes the kessler who has fought the last couple years despite me being a huge fan of his), aa if he can stay away. ward and dirrell...no i would not put a dollar on kelly in those fights. i am a huge bute fan. i love the guy. but he gassed horribly against a pressure guy. i know the food poisoning stuff and i won't discount that. point being, a pressure guy found bute and wore him down and would have had the nod if he could follow the rules. bute was out on his feet. that has never happened to kelly. in fact it has never come close and he has fought guys that are leagues above andrade.
i hear what you are saying. mike pavlik has hinted at the same thing. but "as far as he can go" was the undisputed mw championship. not bad, really.
