I attended an amateur event hosted by Jack Loew this weekend. Perhaps the thing I will remember most from it is watching Kelly Pavlik 'sneak' his way to ringside during one of the events. The Salinas brothers seem to have quite a local following and Kelly seems to have taken to the younger one. He looks about 12/13? at most. Kelly was cheering and giving hand signals as the bout went on. I turned to my son and said, "Talk about your unfair advantage!" For all the **** that Kelly has taken on this forum of late, it was nice to see the young man be able to forget completely about himself and the crowd and just enjoy himself. At that point the focus was on someone else and he was just 'one of the crowd'. It was also nice to see his love of boxing that was amply demonstrated by his actions. I believe he was pretty much taken out of context and misrepresented with his remarks concerning the 'super 6' tournement. Watching him told me all I needed to know about boxing and Kelly.

While I never doubted his character, perhaps a few here can find something to take away from this as I did.

    Good read,

Yeah, I think Pavlik may have been misrepresented a bit in the newspaper article. He seems like a geniune guy and it seemed to be out of character for him.

I hope Pavlik was misrepresented. I was a fan before the Hopkins fight and remained a fan after the Hopkins (no shame in losing to an atg at a higher weight). He's always seemed like a real decent, regular guy. He definitely doesn't need to start talking smack.

That must be an incredible experience for the young guys in there to have Pavlik care to help out and give advice !

I posted this earlier but figured it was a good time to post it again. Pavlik was on the radio here in Cleveland a few days after all that stuff came out about him "criticizing" the super middleweight tournament. While he did still have a few comments about the tournament (which mostly sounded like frustration), it was obvious from his interview on the radio that he was misrepresented. He is just such a big deal in Youngstown, there are bound to be haters. And it seems like right now, they are getting the best of him.

I'm glad some of you enjoyed reading it. I took a day to think about it before I posted. It is a simple thing but I wanted to make sure I conveyed it correctly. Seems like I got the point across. Glad to share. And I missed the post about the Cleveland radio interview. Thanks for reposting in this thread.

I spoke to Kelly after the article came out and he said he was misquoted. Sometimes things like that happen. Kelly has not changed.

Herm, it was good to see you at the event. Great fights!!!! Salinas bros looked great!! I was rooting for Conner against Juan. I like Juan and hope he has a great career, but he was fighting my buddies student.

Amateur scoring being what it is, I really don't remember thinking there was a clear 'winner' in that fight so Conner did OK for himself in front of a 'hostile' crowd. When the Salinas brothers fought the noise level was through the roof! Really nice to see that level of fan excitement in the amateurs even if it was limited to a couple of fighters.

I felt Juan won. I think Conner took the first round and lost the 2nd and 3rd. Juan started pulling away the last 30secs of the 3rd. Conner did awesome. He only has 8 fights and he gave Juan a run for his money. We will have a show on aug 29th, at the wedge. Maybe Juan Conner II?
