Kelly Pavlik could learn from Miguel Cotto....

With the long laundry list of excuses that Kelly and his camp came up with I just looked backed and am soo happy Cotto didn't have ANY excuses in his loss to Marg. Kelly has lost respect and is coming off like a idiot. It makes the classiness of Cotto stand out alittle more to me.

    Thoughts?

I haven't thought about that but that is a great point. Cotto took his loss like a man and that was that. No excuses at all.

By now, I usually don't really care that much that fighters make excuses. A little denial may be necessary to keep the confidence up.

Fighters can't all be like Naseem Hamed and Tommy Hearns and so gracious in defeat.

I didn't like it though when Kelly said "it's not that Bernard is that good". Yes, Bernard really is THAT good.

Why wouldn't he? Cotto is a very good and exciting fighter.
And he showed he IS classy in defeat, unlike Pavlik.

Yep, Pavlik's neem really needs to shut the **** up about it. I like Pavlik, but he needs to control his team. What they do reflects on him.

Totally agree. Cotto showed class in defeat but remained strong willed and confident. Hopefully we won't be seeing his future reactions to a losing effort for a long time.

Cotto was definately far more intelligent in choosing to isolate himself directly after the fight.

If Pavlik's team is throwing out excuses, saying that Pavlik wasn't at his best, why don't they ask Hopkins for another fight then?

Well, Cotto just got beat up and ground down until he had nothing left. Pavlik got embarrassed and badly outboxed. Ultimately Pavlik's loss is much more humiliating because unlike Cotto he wasn't even competitive, so he's more likely to be in denial

The bottom line is that Pavlik will never be anything more than what he is. His strengths are that he's tall, very good power in both hands, excellent stamina, good fundamental jab, hook, and right hand, and a fluid puncher.

His weaknesses are that he is a plodding fighter with slow feet, not much defense, and not especially quick hands

Pavlik will always be a nightmare against opponents who have average or below defense and/or athleticism. Due to his style and his physical limitations athletically, he's going to struggle like hell against good defensive boxers, boxers who can attack from angles, and who are mobile, unless they have no power to gain his respect, or are way smaller and will just be physically overwhelmed. His slow feet and average athleticism are not going to get better and he'll always

I am always bothered when fighters always talk themselves up before a fight and then down after the fight.

I'd like them to say "I busted my ass, but it wasn't good enough. I have to work harder."
