Wow Pavlik systematically destroyed his opponent tonite. We hadvnt seen a puncher like this in the middleweight division in a long time. Better yet, Pavlik has been improving his defense each fight. I think the most underated aspect about kelly pavliks game is his technical brilliance. He is very technically sound boxer. His body attack is ridiculous, his well timed right hooks to the body were devastating. Some all young amatuers should study of pavlik. Pavlik in this fight didnt let his hurt opponent make him go wild, he continued to display that high gaurd and be patient waiting for the opening rather than moving in defenless like he did in the past. Combine his technical brilliance that with his 2 fisted knockout power and accurate combination punching, young age, size, jab and you have yourselves the next ATG middleweight. I understand he didnt fight a world beater in there, but the guy was strong and durable and ranked highly and pavlik destroyed him easily. I think pavlik is going beat up calazaghe. To beat calzaghe, you need a great two fisted knockout puncher with very good stamina, punch rate, top jab, and good size, and youthness on his side. Go Pavlik!!!
He has a fantastic defense, but it's his deceiving power that perplexes me. From watching him land punches, you get the impression as the punch connects that it doesn't appear to be doing heavy damage, but by the time 2 rounds have passed, Lockett's face looks like it had just lost a battle with a meat grinder. As you said before, Pavlik also has amazing accuracy; I loved his well-placed body shots whenever Lockett left an opening. It's going to take someone really special to beat Pavlik.
One quality that Pavlik has, that is somewhat rare among punchers, is that he is VERY calm. He saw everything that was coming at him (which was little), and was able to effectively counter in accurate fashion. I want Pavlik vs. the winner of Abraham-Miranda II!!!!
Didn't you have the machine Pavlik losing to the cyborg Jermain Taylor? Assuming Calzaghe doesn't deteriorate further than he had against Hopkins, he should win at least 9 rounds against Kelly at 168 imo. I didn't watch him tonight, but I've seen a bit of him and what I'll say for him is that he has some great strengths in punching technique and power, and has great will power and mental strength as well, but encountered with a good boxer that can take his shots, I think he's dinner.
If Miranda wins, then a rematch between Pavlik and Miranda is pointless because even if Miranda cut off a leg to make the middleweight limit, Pavlik would knock him out silly. Abraham/Miranda II is just going to let the American public see for themselves whether Abraham is a legit contender in the middleweight division or not. I hear that Pavlik already has a fight lined up against Rubio, but I would rather him face Calzaghe or at least someone like Wright.
It's rare to see a guy as tough as Lockett go down because they can't take the pain. I don't think he was close to being knocked out cold, but the sheer power much have been agonising to get such a gritty opponent to submit three times. Incredible. What I like about Pavlik is that he doesn't look great. He seems slow, can often plod forward sticking to the one-two, but he is great at doing what he does. It isn't flawless but it's damn hard to beat someone who has perfected that style. People will underrate him massively, mark my words. In the same way people overlook Monzon, Pavlik won't get the appreciation he deserves. He's a wrecking machine.
Pavlik is no joke by any means. It's a shame he doesn't have a lot of alluring options. Or you could be Bernard Hopkins and get the right decision.
No Pavlik cleanly intelligently outjabbed outboxed and outgutted taylor in a close but clear unanimous decision. I had Pavlik by 3 points. Pavlik is my favorite modern boxer along with oscar de la hoya. Pavlik is going to be the next ATG.
Thats really laughable Its a pity calzaghe or no other fighter can take his shots. Pavlik doesnt even need to knock joe out, He can outpoint him too. Pavlik can fight at all ranges, his footwork is remarkable, he is always able to manuever himself to get at the perfect angles and distance to land his shots. His jab is outstanding and long. But I think he will stop Calzaghe. I thought Calzaghe looked very amatuerish vs a 44 year old man who managed to floor joe. Well I suggest you do, because his defense ring intelligence is improving each fght.
Pavlik is very similiar to monzon, but pavlik does have his own style. He is a bit unorthodox. Pavlik waits and reacts what the opponents going to do then he pounces. He knows his opponents are going to counterpunch, but he stragecially pays attention how they are going to do it, then he counters back with his well timed shots. His accuracy is unbelievable.
I understand that emotions run high just after the event but this is ridiculous. I watched Lockett get completely outclassed by Yuri Tsarenko (12-7) - he got smashed up over the course of 12 painful 3 minute rounds: This content is protected Lockett needed about 40 stitches. Lockett never believed in himself and is nowhere near world class. He got managed into the WBO no1 position by Frank Warren so I feel people are reading too much into tonight's fight. Basically what he have is a good young boxer [Pavlik] who is easy to hit and has tasted the canvas 4 times so far - and he's only been working at world title level for a year or so. The amount of over-rating is staggering. I can understand being excited by him but seriously, he has massive.. obvious flaws which a high skilled opponent with a brain would have a field day with.
