Kelly Pavlik is not as one dimensional as I thought.........

Even though Pavlik lost to Martinez, has his limitations, always has had, he showed me something in that Martinez fight, as he was able to adapt in the fight.

Early on Martinez used his movement to reset Pavlik and attack him from angles, and I had him taking the first 4 rounds, but Pavlik managed to turn the fight his way by adapting mid fight. Pavlik became wise to what Martinez was doing and started timing his attacks, countering him on the way in, which worked for Pavlik for quite a few rounds, only Martinez then adapted to what Pavlik was doing, he knew Pavlik had become wise to his game plan, that Pavlik was able to counter the singles( pot shots), therefore he had to come up with something else, so he decided to hold his feet and throw combination's, now Pavlik was able to counter the singles, but he could not react to the 3/4's, he could not counter them, the cut did not help either, infact you might say the cut aided Martinez decision to let more combination's go, now I dont know if he inadvertently adapted because of that cut, or whether it was a conscious decision to to let punches more go, but it seemed to change the fight somewhat, that and the cut.

    Thoughts....

i like pavlik too but i think that this is why people think he is one dimensional......i.e his only weapon his to punch toe-to-toe.personally i feel he is a great pressure fighter and is more versatile than most other fighters esb rate highly

    good post

Thats why I thought, that his only way to be effective, was to be the guy getting off first looking to power punch, but I felt at least he showed he could sit back, think about what he needed to do to adapt, which was to sit back and time Martinez's attacks (counter) as he came in, which he had a degree of success doing, now its hard to know whether Pavlik, without the cut, could of continued to counter Martinez's attacks, had Martinez put punches together the way he did whilst Pavlik was not cut?

I think Kelly is very good for a one dimensional fighter and that's why calling him one dimensional may be a bit harsh. But honestly, winning four rounds in a lsoing effort isn't going to convince me that he is versatile.

I believe Kelly could have become a borderline great fighter IF he had continued to improve his game after beating Taylor. A new trainer, maybe Roach....

Not trying to convince anyone he is particularly versatile, just that is not AS! one dimensional as I first thought.

People always call Trinidad one dimensional, which he is, but he can also adapt somewhat, which he managed to do against Whitaker. When Whitaker fought in the pocket, he kept sliding underneath Tito after finishing up his combo's, now Tito became wise to it and started bringing the uppercut into play when he did this, but the problem is, some of the childish posters who have already posted in this thread(not you), are too short sighted as Boxing fans, to see subtle little things like this.

I felt the same. After that loss, too many people began shitting on him and hardly anyone would recognize the positive things he was doing in that fight.

By the middle rounds he had Martinez’s puzzle solved and the tide was turning. Unfortunately for him, Martinez put a serious dent in his comeback by opening up that horrible cut. From then on Pavlik was reduced to eating shot after shot.

That and the one-sided schooling by Bernard, has led to too many people over-criticizing his ability as a fighter. He's not as awful as most make him out to be.
