We've seen Kelly Pavlik for a number of years now. He is well known for beating Jermaine Taylor twice, an incredible feat at the time. He recently fought and lost to Sergio Martinez, and before that he lost to Bernard Hopkins. Before anyone should give up on Pavlik, you have to remember he's only 28 years of age. He's still a young man. Sergio Martinez is 35 years old, and look what he had to go through to finally get his claim to fame last Saturday. Sergio lost to Paul Williams (to some viewers Sergio won or drew), and Sergio lost controversially to Kermit Cintron. Sergio is originally from Argentina, moved to Spain, and now resides in Oxnard, California. Celestino Caballero is an up and rising boxer, but has yet to actually make the big fights and the big money, and he's 33 years old. Chris John is well into his 30s, and he's yet to make it big in the US. Yuriorkis is the same age as Pavlik, and he's yet to make the big money fights. So Pavlik has age on his side. He just needs to stay focus. He'll be back better than ever.

not a bad post (small correction, martinez drew with cintron and it wasn't just controversial, it was embarassing).

in ring years though, pavlik is old. much like cotto his chronological age is not quite reflective of his ring age or, importantly, how set he is in his ways. pavlik and cotto are what they are and unfortunately, aren't likely to change anytime soon

that's pavlik's danger: if he doesn't change his team and add to his fighting style, he's as good as done

Pavlik can still beat plenty of guys and I favor him over Sturm and sylvester any day

Sergio didn't even put on a pair of boxing gloves until he turned 20, so it's not a fair comparison at all. Pavlik's been fighting a lot longer, and he's taken a lot more lumps along the way.

I don't think it's too late for him, he actually seems to have a good sense of what's going on in the ring. He comes across as a guy who has good ring vision. And that's the sort of thing that promotes longevity in the sport. The real question is: does he have the desire/heart/smarts to go back to the gym and sort out his weaknesses, learn from his mistakes, or reinvent himself?

People have accused me of claiming Pavlik wasn't 100% for the Martinez fight. That is not true. I said he put in a **** poor performance. Sadly enough, I do believe he was probably 100% of what he is now capable of. He might turn things around in his next couple fights, but losing to a junior middleweight who is as flawed as Martinez probably means Pavlik is finished as a marque fighter.

Thanks for that correction. I was thinking draw, and I wrote in loss. I was going to also say that he needs to change his team, but I don't know his team too well, and I don't like the idea of people being fired, but Pavlik has to do what's best for him. Hopefully, they can all work it out together where everyone is happy.

could be but i still put him in the same boat as cotto: good talent but changes are needed to reach that top level again. neither is going any further as they are

cotto is trying by hiring steward on as his trainer

pavlik needs to ditch the team he's got now. you can't have clueless cutman, a ****ing cartoon of a trainer and a greedy **** of a promoter and expect to be an ATG

Arum hasn't done Pavlik any harm. It was Pavlik who chose both Hopkins and Martinez.

The cutman was a guy Pavlik wanted to do a favor. Cameron Dunkin pleaded with Pavlik to use Miguel Diaz, but KP insisted on doing that joker a favor.

I've been both a proponent and a critic of Jack Leow. The simple fact is that in Pavlik's last 2 fights he ignored Leow and went out and did his own thing.

Is it just me, or is there a pattern here?

there is true. but the cutman was a joke and i have never been a fan of leow. his advice is never great. he works a decent corner but decent doesn't cut it when you're the middleweight champ. and it's his job to get his fighter to listen. if pavlik doesn't, that's a sign he needs a new corner

The Cintron-Martinez fight wasn't a Cintron win, it was a draw. Despicable due to the fact Martinez got robbed about two times in one night. Back to Pavlik, he has probably done all he can in his career and I don't see him surpassing his victories over JT those being the pennacle of his career. He can come back but not against anyone elite at 168.

Yes, I agree...His career is by no means over, he just needs a major shakeup to his team, and a few fights to get his confidence back.

Another issue is that Pavlik is having a really hard time making 160, and there is too much talent at 168 right now for Pavlik to start competing at a high level there...

or he could turn out to be a jermain taylor or fernando vargas or even worse a jeff lacy.all those guys were champs at a young age and before there where 30 is was all down hill from there.i want be surprised if that happens to him, he strikes as the type of fighter who will only fight one way.sure he do a few things here and there but at the end of the day same old pavlik.straight up and down no special effect !

if was fun while it lasted ghost !!
