Pavlik is pretty close to done. If he gets back to championship level, wins and defends a title several times, they should make a movie about it. He needs a full rebuild from the ground up, mentally and physically.

The problem is his denial. In an interview earlier this week Pav. said: he was having weight problems, is not going to change his team, and worst of all he said he would have won if he was not cut. All freakin' excuses, not taking accountability of anything. How is he going to suceed based on that interview?

It's tough to say that stuff because I like Pavlik.

He said the cut was his own fault because he got lazy and let his hand come down. He took responsibilty.

If the cut changed the course of the fight, it certainly would not be the first time. In the history of boxing, how many fights have been stopped on cuts? It took 30 stitches to close those freaking lacerations! Pavlik was ahead on the cards going into the 9th. All he needed was to split the last 4 rounds, and he would have won. You can't say he could not have done that had he been able to see, because none of us knows. Obscured vision is a pretty big deal.

I agree with the idea that he needs to make some changes.

absolutely right, better training, new trainer/cut man, maybe get somebody like Evander's strength/diet coach, work on a few things..... I do think he would make a good SMW too

He will still fight on, maybe he won't go far enough but can still compete in the division. Don't forget the middleweight division isn't exactly packed with serious talent so he's not done yet. If he moves up to super middleweight he's toast.

Pavlik is an old 28 in my opinion. He started boxing at age 9. The guy in my avatar was done at 28, and he had already been declared "shot," and made a strong come back. Chronological age, and ring age are two different things.

Fernando Vargas is a big detour sign to all up and coming boxers. For one thing, he never seemed to get it together. He fought the best when he wasn't prepared to take them on. He was all gungho (which I admire by the way), but you need to be smart and train hard. He never really improved over the period of his career, and he still came unprepared. He always seemed to have weight problems.

Pavlik has been a pro for 10yrs ... I doubt there's room for improvement ... yeah he can bounce back in a weak division and possibly get his titles back (if a few scenarios take place).

I think the only thing left is to move up in weight but I doubt that he can beat any of those boxers. Pavlik is good but he's too flat footed ... I thought that he would be on the balls of his feet, but he's all power.

Pavlik is a rare commodity in boxing ... an American born - white fighter ... he'll be in the spotlight for as long as he's a draw.

Perhaps you're right. But let's say he takes some time off...let's say a full 2 years. He'll be 30 by then. Not that young, but not that old either. He goes back to the gym with a master plan that he believes in, and that is well thought out. He's hungry, and has decided during his two year layoff who really will work best in his corner, and gets all those people. Do you think he can rejuvenate his career, and become an elite boxer again? Two years is plenty of time for the body to heal, relax, and rejuvenate. It also gives his mind and spirit a chance to heal and rejuvenate itself.

My only problem with talking about the cuts is when someone says "Oh, I would have won the fight if I had not been cut." This is boxing; cuts happen. Fights have turned on cuts before but at the same time fighters have won fighting through the cuts, so to be blunt, nobody really and truly cares if a fighter thinks they would have won if they had not been cut.

So far though I think Kelly has done a much better job post-fight regarding interviews and the like than when he did after the Hopkins fights.

Like the OP said, he's 28. It may be too late(especially if he's not going to switch trainers) to pick up on some things that are missing in his arsenal, but if he picks up on certain subtle things I'd think he'd be a lot better. Time will tell.

His highest point was beating Jermain Taylor, I don't think he'll be able to live up to that moment again.

He's not going to catch anyone by surprise anymore ... he's going to lose his next step up ... unless it's against a flat footed slugger ... I think that Pavlik is tailor made for "boxers."

This is interesting and I think he's spot on. Some trainers, for whatever reason, want to change a fighter. A lot of fighters have had trouble with Floyd Mayweather Sr. for this(namely Hatton and Chad Dawson) as well as Buddy McGirt(Malignaggi). I think most trainers though realize that fighters all have different strengths and weaknesses, and not all of the fighters they have fight the same way. It's unrealistic to expect to teach Hatton the shoulder roll and to be a skilled defensive fighter, it's not his nature. Same with Pavlik, it's not going to be his nature to try to become a slick fighter. He has some subtle weaknesses that would make him a lot better if he worked on them.

By boxers I'm assuming you mean slick boxers and not "boxer-punchers" correct?

That sounds just like the Bronco McKart plan, and we saw how that worked out.

I think he needs to be back in training as soon as the cuts allow, and back in the ring as soon as reasonably possible.
