The big problem with Boo's rationale is the middle rounds, when Pavlik looked as strong and sharp as he always has.

The difference is that in the past he never had to deal with movers and counterpunchers, and Martinez simply wasn't going to stand in front of him any more than necessary. Same thing with Hopkins.

The variable isn't Pavlik — it's his opponent.

Kelly is a very good fighter at 160 but was fortunate that both his eliminator and title shot came against guys who were there to be hit. He never would have won a strap if he weren't able to burn down to MW, because he never was going to beat Calzaghe or the 2007-ish version of Kessler.

And if he moves up and takes on Ward or Bute, same thing. He might do everything right and still lose, simply because he isn't equipped to beat A-level guys of that style.

Your post is extremely disrespectful of Pavlik, and all in the name of soothing your own ego. Poor form. And this after Kelly was such a gentleman after the defeat.

i am right here.. hey i have no problem saying congrats on martinez.. the best man won... i have been reading the comments and i am shocked at how some people turn around...i am not ashamed to say the best man won, i dont think pavlik deserves the critisim he is getting from certain people..i dont think him his trainer and even his (flab, which i did not see any) should be brought up because martinez won... some people should grow some and just say " hey i was wrong and martinez won.. he fought an excellent fight looked damn good" no shame in that.. i am a pavlik fan and i always will be.., pavlik took an ass beating but thats part of the game .. u lose or u win..if pavlik keeps fighting i will be there, and i will support him... i just do not want to see the people who have turned on pavlik to jump back on the wagon,to save face, just do me a favor and stay off..

I remember the annoying Pavlik matchups in Classic not long ago.Boo hurtling in from general like a rabid maniac to predict KO1 or 2 wins over Minter, or telling us Monzon would be a welter today(with obvius implication he'd get smashed by Kelly) etc...

Welcome back Boo. Kelly will be back but like I said before he needs a fresh start and clean house and that starts with Loew. I do think the cuts played a factor as he was starting to figure Martinez out and dropped him but couldn't see because of the cuts. I would love to see Kelly rematch him with a new trainer and we'll see a new and improved Kelly.

Pathetic and that's all I expected from you.

A post about weight-issues and being out of shape wrapped in a bubble of so called 'honesty'.

Pavlik is just no good. Myself and others have been trying to get through to you forever. Taylor was struggling with the likes of Cory Spinks and clearly over-rated, an HBO hype-job who got by on athleticism. The fact that he hasn't won another belt since then - and the fact that he nearly lost it a couple of times before - is testiment to the fact he was never a great fighter.

The rest of Pavlik's resumé is trash. Miranda has been shown time and again since to be a gatekeeper who doesn't have the potential to win an alphabet belt and has relied on his raw power alone. Who else has Pavlik beaten? Past-prime McKart? Zuniga? Zertuche? Wow, great resumé.

The Hopkins fight showed his fatal flaws and the Martinez fight has done the same. Predictable, robotic, slow, technically flawed and he hasn't got a defence.

Frankly he was lucky to be called 'undisputed MW champion' and will go down as one of the weakest lineal MW champions in the history of boxing. He won't come back from this and do anything special because he simply isn't good enough and will never beat a P4P ranked top-class fighter. He's B level.

And let me ask you, after the discussion about Monzon-Pavlik, where Monzon is apparently a blown up 147 who Pavlik would beat or give a very difficult fight because he apparently chews up and spits up under-sized opponents like nothing, is he still capable of beating or ultra-competitive with Monzon? :rofl

I don't know Kelly personally, so who knows if this stuff is true, but the rumors are he is a hard, hard drinker. If this is true it probably is taking a toll on his body and is his problem making weight. It also seems to me he doesn't have the fighting spirit he once had. So if he wants to continue to perform at the highest level he is accustomed to he needs to make some tough choices. Only he can make that choice.

It isn't PAv's footwork for many boxers don't have grerat footwork. It comes down to your style, and the way you deliver punches by instinct. You can't train for speed unless you are willing to pay the price. PAvlik can't fight inside...and his problem is his punching technique. He doesn't put punches together center ring, he just plods in. No jab, and no hook off the jab, no double right, no straight right, lean back left hook, no two to three left hooks in a row, no digging to the body with a left hook. Everything is left...right...left...right...jab...left-right...

He may not have, and honestly Loew should have told him to go for broke at the end, but really, it goes back to what I said early styles makes fights. Here are hilights of some of his big wins.

    of course, the Crunk matchup...

Now, what are Pavlik's opponents in those videos not doing that BHOP and Sergio did? Where are they positioned as opposed to Pavlik? Really, you can do this for almost all of Pavlik's wins, but these were probably his two most visible wins.

I also think you're being hard on Pavlik in the sense that he got absolutely schooled for the first 4 rounds and instead of melting down he made a good showing for the new few rounds. He couldn't get the KO because Sergio wasn't going to unneccessarily sit right in front of Pavlik and get in unwarranted exchanges.
