Kelly Pavlik V Bernard Hopkins

Really? I know Pav is younger and has a good work rate but he is not as smart a fighter as calzaghe and it took a lot for him to adjust and beat hopkins.

I go with b-hop in a boring as hell spoil fest. Frustrates pav to hell imo.

 

Anybody claiming Kelly Pavlik will stop Bernard Hopkins is delusional.

Nobody and I mean nobody in or around the middleweight divisions stops Hopkins, not in his prime and not now. The man doesn't get hit cleanly enough to be stopped, and he's been in with much more elusive fighters than Pavlik (Calzaghe and Jones).

I see Bernard Hopkins pulling out a UD and yes, even at his age. He is a master spoiler, and Pavlik won't be able to land half of the shots that he is accustomed to landing. Let's not overrated Pavlik's power either. He has a great KO ratio, but he had to hit Miranda more than enough times flush to make some dents. Hopkins is a level above Miranda, his defense is tighter, and he has more boxing intelligence. I doubt it would even be competitive.

And just to clarify, Joe Calzaghe did not put in a bad performance against Hopkins.

 

Why is this a given? When have we ever even seen Pavlik troubled in the ring and look beffuddled???? I love how Calzaghe is lifted to god-like status for his "ring smarts" and Pavlik is degraded as a mindless brawler :deal Whooaa Calzaghe adjusted in the Kessler fight....wow! One thing wasn't working so he did another and won, how many times has that happened? He didn't do anything special and didn't figure Hopkins out, please don't act like he did. Hopkins got tired, and that is why he lost, its that simple. :deal

 

Kelly Pavlik has been on his ass a number of times against second rate opposition, but generally he doesn't seem to have too many problems. Fact is however, Pavlik hasn't fought anybody as cagey as Hopkins or as experianced as Hopkins.

Joe Calzaghe has never been lifted to god-like status. He is where he deserves to be #2 P4P.

At this point, we haven't seen evidence that Pavlik is capable of adjusting whereas Calzaghe did it against Kessler, and yes, also against Hopkins. People say Hopkins gassed, and he did get tired in the last few rounds, but he was never actually throwing any punches, even in the middle rounds.

 

Because he was gassed in the middle rounds too, he looked awful in that fight. When he was fresh, early he was beating Joe. And Joe Cal is not P4P #2, sorry. He had his golden opportunity to prove his critics wrong and showcase his skills and he failed at that. Every single person that watched that fight and didn't know Calzaghe had something bad to say about him....and worse to say about Hopkins. He should've dominated that version of Hopkins...the #2 P4P fighter in the world would not struggle with that fighter :deal

 

All that said, Hopkins doesn't have the stamina anymore and has to seriously pace himself just to go 12 rounds. I don't see Hopkins beating Pavlik by just moving away and trying to counter with a few hard punches a round. Pavlik's activity alone should be enough to beat Hopkins at this stage of his career.

That version of Hopkins was coming off wins over Antonio Tarver and Winky Wright, and was in most peoples top 4 p4p lists at the time of fighting Joe.

I think you have personal distaste for Joe, which actually discredits anything you have to say about him as a fighter.

 

I don't even know Joe, why would I have a personal distaste for him. Hopkins beat an unmotivated and sluggish Tarver. Winky Wright made his name and legacy at 154lbs and stretched it at 160lbs....Hopkins made him come up to 170lbs and was losing early on even. Hopkins might have been on the rings P4P list and even yours, but he wasn't on mine. I watched all his fights and he just wasn't performing. He couldn't even clearly beat Jermain Taylor in 2 tries! Why is that ALWAYS ignored????

Fair points.

I don't ignore the fact that he was beaten in 2 close fights against Jermain Taylor, but styles make fights, so the result of that fight doesn't neccesarily play a factor.

I just feel even at his advanced age, Hopkins is a great fighter and can still go 12 rounds. Perhaps not comfortably, but Hopkins has never won on workrate, he just outlands his opponents by spoiling their work and counterpunching. There is no reason why he can't do the same to Pavlik, who is a very predictable fighter, and with overrated power.
