Kelly Pavlik v Sergio Martinez......Who ya got?

It's befitting, IMO, that Pavlik holds two alphabet titles. I have more a gripe with him holding the geuine title (The Ring's) and not doing anything whatsoever to prove that he deserves it, TBH.

Martinez is too busy for Pavlik in this fight, IMO. I expect him to stay mobile and bamboozle Pavlik's limited attacking forays and take this on points. Pavlik's power can't be forgotten as well, though. All things considered, this is a fantastic fight and I can't wait. I am very excited about what it means for the division should Martinez win.

when im tryin to predict results i try to imagine the two of them in the ring and the dynamic of the fight. in this one its all about martinez's approach for me. will he try to fight like he did against paul williams or in and out with a lot of lateral movement?

i reckon it will end up with most avid boxing fans having martinez close but pavlik will land 2/3 eye catching head snapping punches every round and the boardwalk hall going nuts and influencing the judges.

from pavliks point of view this fight doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me. if he wins people will say well williams beat him anyway and if martinez boxes smart its almost impossible for pavlik to look good.

 

I think this fight could be great. I am glad to see Martinez getting big fights even at this weight. Pavlik will prove too strong for me but Sergio will fight him for each and every second of each round and make it closer than the score cards will have it.

 

martinez dominate pavlik in a wide points win IMO. Pavlik was a disaster waiting to happen. He got schooled by hopkins, and it did him more harm than if he has been kay'od to be honest. He was short in every department, and showed the if the bully is bullied (correctly) he doesn't have a plan b, as e is relying on a big right to get him out of trouble

 

Hopefully Martinez wins and decides to campaign at middle, and Rhodes gets his hands on that WBC strap.
And to be fair to Pavlik his middleweight defences have been agianst poor opposition to date, but i'll not hold it against him that he's defending against a light-middle - Martinez is far superior to the likes of Sturm & Sylvester.

 

Don't you think Pavlik's reign is further evidence that the Ring as a title is as flawed as any of the other abc titles?

 

This should be another great fight. Pavlik is a lot like Williams in that he brings the fight to you and throws a lot of punches. Unlike Williams, however, Pavlik actually intends to hurt you with his punches.

Martinez is probably the best fighter I've seen recently when it comes to employing a stick and move strategy. He also used a good bit of infighting against Williams.

I've got Pavlik by TKO in this one. I think he'll land a similar amount of shots to those Williams landed, but the punches will be much harder, and they'll be mostly power shots rather than jabs, since Martinez is a southpaw. Martinez will probably have a great fight, but his shots just won't have the same effect that they had against Williams. Pavlik will put in good body work on the inside, unlike Williams, and this will have an effect on Martinez. Eventually, Pavlik is going to catch him with a right hand that Martinez doesn't see, and then it'll be downhill from there.

Good fight though, and I'm glad to see it being made. I still think Martinez/Williams II needs to happen this year though.

 

Not at all. I look at it like this: Was it the Ring that dished up Lockett, Rubio and Espino? No, it wasn't. Pavlik has taken advantage if anything and has sat on the title ever since. Let's be fair, if you are going to discredit the legitimacy of the Ring title, what are the alternatives? Although not full-proof, the Ring's criteria for a champion is by far and beyond better than any current alternative out there. To his credit, Pavlik did what he had to do and beat the genuine Middleweight champ at the time, but since then he has sat behind ABC mandos, hand-picked opponents and the Ring title ever since.

As I said before, hopefully Martinez will win and will herald a new phase of 160 where the lineal champ is willing to take on the best available:good.

 

I have to say, I really like this fight. Two contrasting styles which I feel will mesh well to give us a great fight (or make it horribly one sided, I'm not sure )

Either a Pavlik TKO late or a wide Martinez decision. I'll let you know closer to time

 

I've watched a lof of these two guys lately and it's obvious why most are going for Martinez.
There is no doubt in my mind that Martinez will get the first few rounds for starters. But Pavlik knows he needs a HUGE performance in this one to convince everyone. I think Pavlik will grind his man down and win a narrow decision.
Whilst Pavlik does come forward a lot and isn't the quickest a lot of Martinez' shots will be from angles, pot shots and not having enough snap in the to really hurt Pavlik. I think 'The Ghost' will wear his man down. But I don't think he'll stop him.

 

Sadly I don't believe there are any alternatives. These forums are destined to be forever full of dispute as regards the divisions number one, because the legitmacy of all belts can be undermined.
The Ring can't be blamed for Pavilk's abc mandatories, but the fact remains that under their own criteria they are powerless to prevent such mismatches, so hypothetically Pavlik could indeed fight Brian Rose with the title on the line.
A poster on the general (!) summed it up nicely, Assero I think is his name is, that the Ring is the hardest belt to win, but the easiest to retain.
Anyway back to Martinez - Pavilk; i've gone for Martinez on points, but I worry about Martinez gassing and being stopped late on. Hopefully that don't happen.
