Kelly Pavlik v Sergio Martinez......Who ya got?

You've got to remember Martinez took that at short notice. This time he has longer to prepare, more time to adjust to the weight and Pavlik is nowhere near as busy as Williams.

I think Pavlik is being sold a bit short in this thread, he is a decent fighter who always gives it his all. He's not going to end up being one of the ATG Middleweights but he's good.

I doubt Martinez has experienced power like Pavlik's before. That's where the fight will be won or lost for Martinez IMO, if he can take Pavlik's punches or not. If he can I expect him to prevail on points in a war of attrition. Something like 7-5 on the cards. Sergio's just too awkward and showed against Williams that he can find gaps in his opponents defence and keep exploiting them.

Pavlik will give it his all, he knows this is make or break for him so he'll be at his best but ultimately it just won't be good enough.

Can see Martinez embarrasing Pavlik in the early round and then hanging on for dear life late on and taking a decision. Unless he gets ripped off again.:-(

As always Losfer you hit the nail on the head and drove it through the two by four.

The "one" "two" is set up off the jab especially against sitting ducks like Taylor and Miranda. Martinez however never gives you the same look twice so Pavlik will need to have a full arsenal of punches to get to SM, which we know he doesn't have.

I think Sergio will have to beat Pavlik and the judges sadly. Pavlik's style is suited perfect for Martinez as Kelly comes straight forward, I worry about Pavlik coming forward and scoring only because he's coming forward, He gets countered by sneaky straight left and right hooks all night.

 

Thats my main concern Slip. Pavlik will be at home and coming forward, Martinez could get jobbed.

 

Pavlik hasn't chosen to fight anybody apart from Bernard Hopkins. You're probably talking about his mandatory challengers. I know you probably have trouble reading given how ****ing infantile your post was, so I won't blame you for that little slip.

 

Good call. Freight-train-punching Edison Miranda couldn't make a dent and a Light Heavyweight version of Bernard Hopkins that battered Pavlik from pillar to post couldn't stop him, but the career Light Middleweight with the 50% KO ratio will. atsch

 

Yeah, what a ****ing ****. He goes up to fight Bernard Hopkins when he should have been fighting more fighters like Rubio and Espino, right? And he takes time off to let his injury heal when he should have been fighting with one arm, right?

Absolutely. I mean, the fact that Martinez was averaging fewer than 50 punches a round vs. Williams and STILL couldn't make it past Round 6 without panting like he'd run the London Marathon twelve times over makes him a real powerhouse, ripe to outwork a fighter that has been known to throw consistently up to 100 punches a round without tiring.

 

I hope Martinez wins, I think it is a good stylistic match up for him, he will land left bombs all night IMO, but he will prolly get jobbed if it goes the 12.

For the good of boxing I hope Pavlik loses.

 

Espino wasn't a mandatory. Although I accept that he probably wanted a gimme fight after his injury problems.

 

Miranda isn't anywhere near the same class as Martinez for starters, and was basically created by HBO.... was badly hammered by Pavlik, Abraham x2 and Ward. The only decent fighters he has beaten are a faded Eastman and Allan Green. Was he struggling with the weight also?

Hopkins hasn't stopped anyone in years.... if he'd really put the foot down he might have gotten rid of Pavlik, but obviously at nearly 44 was struggling a bit with stamina and had to pace himself.

Martinez isn't the heaviest of hitters granted, but IMO will frustrate Pavlik into being reckless and eventually the referee will step in.

 

I think it is Martinez's fight to lose, I think if he hurts pavlik then he will stop him and not let him off the hook like taylor did. The biggest detriment to pavlik in this fight is his corner who dont know how to advise him against a slick fighter all that Jack loew ever says is double the jab on repeat.

Perhaps not offically, but he essentially was. The alphabets said, fight someone in the top 5 or we could strip you. That sounds pretty mandatory to me. Plus, as you said, it's unreasonable to expect him to be fighting Godzilla with half a training camp and only one good arm.

 

You're not helping yourself. Hopkins on fight night weighed more than Martinez will by the best part of two stone. He hit him with everything but the kitchen sink in the last round alone, and he CAN hit when he wants to. (Hopkins was a very aggressive fighter with considerable pop before he became champ at 160 and refined his style.) Plus, Martinez just isn't as good a boxer as Hopkins, and won't land the same shots, let alone punch as hard. He has ZERO chance of getting a stoppage against a guy whose chin is proven solid at 160.

It's possible that Martinez will win a decision, but predictions of a KO are just embarassing to read.
