Kelly Pavlik v Sergio Martinez......Who ya got?

Pavlik should beat him. People are making a real lazy style comparison between Martinez and Hopkins and transferring that to this fight. It's just not the case. Martinez doesn't have the slick old school moves of Hopkins, his defence is very much reflex based and he can be hit especially later on when he slows down. Hopkins also hits a lot harder which puts a fighter in two minds, Martinez is a small guy.

I predict Martinez starts ok but gradually Pavlik gets his punches off when the pace slows and I doubt Martinez handles it. If Paul Williams can rock you with arm punches he's in trouble.

 

Irrelevant. Martinez couldn't hurt Pavlik if he went into the ring with a baseball bat. Even Taylor's power pisses all over Martinez's at 160 (and anyway, Pavlik isn't making a mistake like that again).

Again, you just don't know what you're talking about. Jack Loew isn't Nazim Richardson, but, fundamentally, he knows the score and has given Pavlik varied advice from opponent to opponent. The reason you think he doesn't is probably because you've probably just watched Pavlik/Taylor I & II and Pavlik/Hopkins, and that is all. Taylor was vulnerable to the 1-2 because of his hand positioning. Against a mover like Hopkins, doubling the jab avoids getting countered with right hands off the jab and allows you to pin an opponent down. It was sensible advice. When the advice isn't appropriate, Loew says other things. Against Miranda he basically abandoned the 1-2 and just traded; against McKart he went to the body etc., which you'd know if you weren't calling things you hadn't seen.

 

I just think Pavlik is too big and powerful for him personally.

 

Characteristically astute posting. A Martinez decision is by no means out of the question, but Pavlik holds most of the cards here and it spells for a late stoppage. And I agree that the Martinez/Hopkins comparisons are largely superficial; Martinez doesn't have half the "bag of tricks" or ring-generalship of B-Hop.

 

Yes I decided to watch the two taylor fights and the hopkins fights but nothing else :roll:

If the one-two doesn't work for pavlik him and his corner are stumped, he struggles with slick boxing. Im not saying he's not talented at what he does but for pavlik there is plan A then plan gamble. Hopkins is a very defensive minded fighter but at times he was teeing off on pavlik, even espino landed too many shots for the supposed gulf in class between them.

Martinez has a chin, can box and I think he will tattoo pavlik all night and stop him once pavlik realises he can't bully him.

 

People are making a real lazy assumption that those who picked Martinez are doing so soley on the back of Pavliks fight with Hopkins.

 

Absolutely agree with this. Martinez deserves credit for fighting Pavlik, but he should be at 154.

That's bull****, as I pointed out in my previous post. Pavlik is orthodox, that's it.

Not at 160. He doesn't have a better chin that (m)any of the other opponents at 160 none of whom have lasted past round 10.

On what basis? Where have you seen Martinez show sufficient power and Pavlik show a sufficiently shaky jaw?

 

I guess if you ARE lazy and have just watched the Taylor and Hopkins fights then at least you've seen every world class boxer that Pavlik has faced...;O)

 

Yeah, but don't claim that that's all he does when it's trivially falsified by his other fights.

 

I feel Pavlik looked average in his last fight against a guy smaller than Martinez who shouldn't have even been in there in the 1st place.

Pavlik is not great, and has seemingly lost the fearless streak in him that made him such an easy guy to root for.

Martinez should be able to pepper Pavlik and stay out of trouble, and if he can survive the later rounds should win on points.

Bar Taylor who has Pavlik beaten? Miranda was undefeated when he beat him, fair enough. If Pavlik 'ruined' Taylor then I think B-Hop might have 'ruined' Pavlik :rofl

in all seriousness, Martinez is no Hopkins, but no ones saying you need to put on a master class to beat Pavlik.

 

I've seen his last 11, not that it matters as the guy above is correct with the world class comment. He's a 1-2 merchant because that is what works for him, that is his bread and butter in terms of offence. I don't reckon pavlik is a one punch knock out artist at world level, I think he wears his opponents down. Martinez knocked cintron out.

Pavlik will get worked over, we are both entitled to differing opinions but martinez isnt a lockett or an espino. :hi:

 

Well let's be fair about it. Pavlik took that fight on less than half a training camp and looked seriously rusty. He basically treated the fight like a sparring session to be honest, made no effort to do anything other than fight inside and was basically laughing when Espino tried to hurt him. That fight is about as relevant as Margo's stopping Martinez all those years ago.

Do you need a masterclass to beat Martinez? Williams beat him, and Williams isn't ... you see where I'm going with this.

 

Either log off or post something sensible. Pavlik KO'd his last opponent with uppercuts, beat Miranda with left hooks and right hands, iced McKart by going to the body. You haven't seen his fights, because if you had you'd know that he throws a variety of punches. Monzon's best punches were the jab and the straight right. Does that make him one-dimensional?
