Kelly PAVLIK vs. Paul WILLIAMS: is it really that bad?

My personal pick for the next Pavlik fight would be Anthony Mundine: a very good fighter moving down in weight with a bad style for Kelly. Picking Williams would be a step down in danger IMO, BUT! given Paul's size, a fight vs. Kelly doesn't sound that bad (compared to the easy early KO vs. Rubio or Duddy).

You might wonder why is Paul fighting at 147, when he's an average sized MW? Why not fight at 160? Well, if you check boxrec, you'll find that Paul Williams had 11 fights at MW (mostly over the LMW limit) and he won all of them, producing 10 KOs...

The fact that Williams can make 147 somehow doesn't necessarily means he can't be a legitimate MW. In fact, almost all of the criticism he recieved after the Quintana loss were about his very serious dehydration to make weight, affecting his performance. Of course he destroyed Quinatana in a rematch and looked stronger than ever: looked like it's time to make up in weight anyway.

The facts: he's 6'1" (same as Hopkins, taller than Calzaghe) with a decent advantage in reach (Kelly's is 75", Paul's is 82"). Remember that most would pick Cotto to defeat Williams because Miguel would chop down Paul on the body - which is very possible since Willams' body looks terribly thin. That wouldn't be the case if he could put some muscle weight on and had to lose a lot less for the weigh-in.

So my point is: even if Pavlik could have a much more dangerous opponent in Mundine or Winky given their style, and I would pick him to defeat Williams, Paul could still fight as a legitimate MW who throws a very large amount of punches with decent speed, punching power, good stamina, very good chin, a reach advantage and a good jab to take away Kelly's - which is the key to beat Pavlik. So I say: if Mundine or Wright is not available, bring on Williams! He's a better opponent than John Duddy or Marco Antonio Rubio and an interesting fight before Abraham. Tall and tough guys throwing a lot of punches.

Mundine is available and has put up a great $ offer but Mundine is not a big name so Pavlik will give that a miss.

Mundine would be dangerous for a while but Pav would ko him in the 8th.

Pavlik would put Williams in orbit. Pavlik should fight Abraham, and soon, and then move up to SMW, assuming he wins, which is by no means a certainty.

Every advantage that Williams has over his opponents at WW is going to be nullified. He'll actually be the smaller guy. He'll be out-jabbed and Pavlik will brutalize his body. This will not be a pretty fight to watch if you're a Williams fan.

I love watching Pavlik, but they can do better then Williams. Let Williams face a top 10 guy before he fights a top guy. The fight is worth $hit.

i dont think this is a bad fight. Back in the day this would be fine because there was only welterweight then middleweight. Let williams step up if he loses at least he dared to be great unlike other fighters. I would much rather see pavlik fight the punisher than rubio, duddy, or mudine. I think his speed and output would cause some problems but eventually that monster right hand would put him away.

No its not a bad fight. Its obvious Paul Williams is not a welterweight and Pavlik has been trying to get better fights but every one is busy.

The problem is that while Paul Williams is not a natural welterweight, Pavlik is not a natural middleweight. They're both fighters who somehow manage to shrink themselves down two weight divisions before each fight.

I'm beginning to suspect that Williams decided he couldn't fight at Welterweight any more. So he took a look at light middlewight and when he didn't see anyone worth fighting he decided to go to middleweight.

Mundine is a bigger name than lockett though mate so i dont think i would write that fight off just yet. Might be a good one for Pavlik, i think he would be tested in this and might go the distance.

Also why are people completley writing off Duddy as such a pushover? Would be a great fight i think.

Pftt.... c'mon man.. Williams hasn't even beaten a top15 middleweight, he's gonna get crushed :-( And I'm a big fan of his, so I am sincerely hoping that he stays away from Pavlik, it could be a career-ending beatdown.

im a huge fan of his also.. and thinks he will lose

and i still believe this is one of the most exciting fights you can make in boxing today

    atleast top 10

you have pavlik - one of the most exciting boxers in the sport today, wins most of his fights by knock outs and needs a fight to further push his name into the minds of the general fan, the more hardcore boxing fan are waiting for a fight that will truly test his skills with other matches not happening why not take paul williams if he is up to it?

    then you have

paul williams- one of the most exciting boxers in the sport today, has a crowd pleasing high energy offensive style and will take on anybody (has called out cotto, floyd, and oscar numerous times) coming off a big victory over quintana pw also needs a fight to further push his name into the publics eye.. and if cotto, marg (who he said he would take a rematch with), and shane are busy... why not take pavlik if its available.. his team cant be completely stupid... everyone in the boxing world knows what pavlik is capable of doing so .. paul williams team must know something that we dont for putting him in the ring wiht pavlik......

keep in mind pavlik has knocked out 89% of the boxers who have stepped inside the ring with him so more or less him knocking out paul williams would be no surprise...

i think kp should pull it off but if pw pulls an upset i wouldnt be surprised because its a big risk .... and they (pw's team) would only put him in the ring with him if the truly believe he can win
