I'm gonna say Buchanan would have outpointed him with room to spare over 15 and be accused of heresy, but I'm dead serious...Ken was too damn good for Oscar on his best day. Ok, a 12 ROUND DECISION...Why 12? 15 rounds should ALWAYS be the standard for all these dream matches.
Ken is a better boxer, Oscar the better athlete, I can see Kens better movement/defense and timing being the difference in a close 1. Oscar was also quite a 1 handed fighter at 135 although Oscar would have a massive size advantage as he was the king of weight draining at 135
I think Buchanan was a better athlete. What gives Oscar the chance at the weight is his size. But Buchanan is mobile and has great, great stamina. I agree with Red Cobra that he would win wide.
Oscar was a beast at 135 and i think underrated here on the Classic,However even though Oscar was a huge 135 and a big bomber at this weight he was not quite a finished product as far as Ring generalship.I agree with one of the post who said Oscar was also the more athletic here he also had the big edge in power . Although I think Buchanan would definitley frustrate Oscar at times . I think Oscar wins a close but convincing decision here with a knockdown and bigger shots making the differance.
I'm not sure Oscar was ever a "finished product" as a ring general. The one night where he actually looked like a great one, it cost him so much energy that he couldn't close the show. I was watching Buchanan - Laguna II the other day and was highly impressed with Ken's ring IQ. He fought really tall for 5'7 - 5'8 and had a great sense for controlling distance. I've also got my doubts about whether Oscar could score a clean KD on him. The KD in the 1st round against Duran was borderline.
You are kind of right, about him not being the finished product. I think he could have been greater but id still rate him as an atg. Some kind of mental lapses he would have at times I think we all know in which fights (no need to go over those again) I thought he was on his way to being as great as he could be when he had El Professor, but Oscar switched trainers as often as his socks. He kept Alcazar for a while but he was the most inexperienced one of all his trainers. Ive met both in person(Oscar Many times). I met Buchanan when he was inducted into the WBHOF. Oscar is physically the much bigger man,and pretty damn talented too. Actually i think Buchanan was a great fighter too and hed give Oscar his share of problems too but Im sticking with Oscar on this one. If anyone could score a clean KD on him it would be Oscar who was a really hard puncher at lightweight. However he probably wouldnt stop Buchanan who was a very smart fighter and showed a good chin throughout his career.
Ken Buchanan gets his due here on Classic. And he abslutely derails Diva La Hoya like Fritzie Zivic would on a clean night. I get a picture of Zivic handling Oscar like he did Eddie Booker or perhaps even ending matters like he did Bummy Davis. De La Hoya would be a fresh kid with a phony smile getting taken to school. --or Eddie Haskell from "Leave it to Beaver" catching an overdue beating from Ward Cleaver.
Yeah Right:-lol: I dont underestimate neither of those guys but no way do i see that happening, hell i dont believe any fighter around Oscars prime weight 130 to 154 outclasses him like that. Hed be competetive with any ATG,and beat quite a few of them too.:yep
Even though Oscar was inexperienced, he was still an elite fighter. His power was the ultimate nullifier. At 135, his power was scary,. It was hard to get any offense against Oscar at 135 because he was so explosive. He was also extremely fast at 135. I don't think Ken could beat Oscar. Buchanan was an excellent fighter, but Oscar was elite, and it would take a fighter an elite fighter to beat Oscar.
Buchanan was elite and had better skills than Oscar, Oscar is faster though and has more power. But no faster than Duran and not as good a puncher
Depends what Oscar at 135lbs. I'd take the Oscar who fought Hernandez to possibly win. His defense was brilliant that night. Constant head and upperbody movement, superb accuracy, speed and combinations. Ken would have a tough time landing on that Oscar.
