I fancy Ken in this fight. alexis was too slow a starter to beat KB duran is the only guy I would really fancy to beat Ken @ lightweight (which he did according to the record. some dispute this)
Looking at both's fights with Jim Watt will give you a greater idea of how this fight would go. I will refrain from choosing a result due to them both being in my top 5 fighters of all time. Tough.
Alexis at 5' 10" is taller than Ken at 5' 7-1/2 ". Plus, his reach is 72 " vs the 70" for Ken. Arquello's hooks and right hands would reach Ken often late in the fight. I like both fighters though.....it would be a war.
I dunno, Buchanan may elect to just play it safe and box.No need to get into a shootout with the harder hitting Arguello. It's a tough fight to pick.
I'd love to see this fight, as these are two of my favourite smaller boxers. Both had very impressive styles, in my opinion. I favour Kenny as the better mover, the more continual boxer throughout the fight and the slight stylistic advantage. I think Buchanan would win a pretty decisive decision.
I think Buchanan would have a tougher time than expected at landing flush on Arguello, who would use his reach to jab and keep Buchanan at bay, landing occasionally with the power shots. As skilled as Buchanan was, Arguello was probably the sharpest puncher I've ever seen, and I'd say he would land with more frequency in a very tough fight. Buchanan was generally busier, but most of Arguello's opponents were. Buchanan has an edge in skill and craft, but not by much. Arguello has a much bigger edge in their punching power and technique. Could go either way, a very close fight, but I favor the absolute peak Arguello to do enough in the later rounds to overcome Ken's early lead and take a decision, although it is possible (not all that likely) that Arguello stops Buchanan very late in 15 rounds. A great fight.
I've been thinking of this fight since this thread was posted and I can't yet come up with a conclusion. I think Arguello was at his peak at Jr. Lightweight. Although his foot and handspeed were never great, I think it was slightly better at 126 and 130 than at 135. I don't know if this was the weight, age or both. This is why I'd give someone of Buchanan's skill a shot to beat Arguello at 135. At 130, I think Arguello eventually tracks down anybody over 15 rounds. At 135, maybe not. It would be treacherous though for Buchanan. His tendency to drop his hands and raise his chin could lead to a downfall against Arguello. I also think Arguello's height and reach makes just about everyone have to come to him. One fight, I'd say it's up for grabs. A trilogy, I'd say without much confidence, Arguello takes it 2-1. Also, I'm not sure where yet, but I think Buchanan belonged in Ring's top 80.
It could be argued because he is certainly greater than Khaosai Galaxy who they have in the top 50, but I think there have been 80 fighters of the past 86 years (they did the list in '02) that should be above Ken. For example, if you take Galaxy out, you could put in Luis Rodriguez, and because this list was in '02, Mayweather would now be in, as well as Pacquiao, Barrera, Morales, etc. Ken is top 100 all-time though. I agree with your opinion of Arguello taking the edge in a series, if not the one fight.
This is indeed a difficult fight to predict and one that has been discussed at lenght before. I say flip a coin boys, and there is your answer as this fight is literally a toss-up in my opinion.
Yeah, very good point about the Ring Top 80 being 6 years old already. I'd definitely take out Galaxy for Buchanan (#43 is bizarre), but you're also correct that a few of the "new" guys belong in. No question though I think, Buchanan is Top 100.
