Ken Buchanan V Julio Cesar Chavez at Lightweight

I don't think Buchanan could keep Chavez outside for the 15, which he'd need too here. Chavez UD 10-5 maybe wider

Buchanan would have probably been Chavez's toughest test in his prime. He was not only a highly skilled boxer but he also had the grit to hang in there until the final bell and keep trying.

Chavez's more methodical pressure would give Buchanan the necessary chances to box behind his jab and use his footwork, but Chavez would occasionally land some telling punches of his own and batter Buchanan at close range where Buchanan could do little but clinch and contain him. I think it would go the distance and the fight would be relatively close. Chavez might just edge it, as we know he did have the judges on his side.

 

If a guy is great people know it regardless of someone coming along like Roberto Duran did. Ken cannot use Duran as an excuse for why he was not as great as he could have been. In actuality, that is why he is overrated. People want to put Duran up on a higher place since he beat him.

 

I would put it this way, if Chavez fought in the era of Duran, he would not have gone 88-0.

the questions is how would Duran do if he fought Whitaker or Mayweather or any elite boxer. I do believe Duran would beat Meldrick Taylor at 140, but some guys Chavez fought would have been trouble for Duran like Whitaker, Delahoya etc.

 

They were plenty of trouble for Chavez as well.

 

It would be a war but I don`t see any version of my countryman beating the Chavez that beat Rosario.... Chavez forces inside more often than not & lands the more precise & damaging punches throughout - en route to a points victory whether it be 12 or 15 rds.

I don`t see Buchanan being stopped but I don`t see him beating the very best of Julio Cesar Chavez either.

I actually think Whitaker beats Duran, and has a much easier fight than with Chavez. Chavez had better foot positioning than Duran, but Duran had better infighting skills. Whitaker is not going to fight Duran on the inside... And Whitaker had underrated body punches if the fight is at his pace, which it would be.

Duran lost to Benitez,Hearns,Hagler,Leonard. Legends like Whitaker. Duran was made for Whitaker.

 

Unlike those guys, Whitaker was 5'6 and weighed 135 pounds at his best. I'm sure Pernell too would have done awesomely against Leonard, Hearns and Hagler.

 

Since you're a big believer in Duran not having beaten enough all-time greats, let me ask you, which all-time greats did Whitaker beat? I'll give you Julio Cesar Chavez, who too would have been whipped by a 147 pound Duran. Azumah Nelson? Calling him an all-time great might be a stretch and either way he certainly wasn't an all-time great in the lightweight division.

Who did Whitaker beat that Duran wouldn't have? No one. Julio Cesar Vasquez would've brought his face like the rest of the brawlers that Duran beat. Ramirez, Paez, McGirt? Perhaps the sturdy Roger Mayweather?
