So, the greatest Mexican fighter up against the greatest Scot. 15 rounds for the undisputed Lightweight title. Take your pick.
Ran this one over in my head many times. A stylistic matchup that really favors Buchanan in a good, tough fight over 15 rounds.
Buchanan didn't have the firepower to keep Chavez honest. I see the same methodical beat down that happened to Camacho, Rasario,Laporte, and many others. The relentless, skillful pressure Chavez was capable of would force Buchanan into a defensive posture fighting to survive, not to win. 12 or 15rds Chavez wins by unanimous dec, or late stoppage.
Agree with lot of this. Mad as it sounds, if it were a 12 rounds, I'd give it to Kenny by wafer thin decision. But if it were a 15, then I see Julio breaking thru Ken's guard and just hammering him to the floor.
chavez takes advantage of him using every dirty trick in the book, butts, elbows, low blows, lacing, thigh shots.......bucchanon just looks to the ref and takes it up the ass.
Chavez. I just cannot see what, in Kenny's resume, gives the idea that he could have stayed away for the whole fight. It would have been a competitive fight, and Kenny would have had his moments, but I see him on the wrong end of a career-shortening beat down. Chavez would be too strong, too relentless, too discouraging and too hurtful. At lightweight, Julio was more accomplished than a 21 year old Duran although Roberto grew into the best lightweight ever, in my opinion. But if he'd stayed at the level he was at the age of 21 Duran wouldn't be in the running for that accolade. And that 21 year old was too much for Kenny. I know Duran said Buchanan was his toughest opponent but, had he been 25 or 26 when the fight happened and he had faced Kenny with the skill set he had since gained, I doubt that he would have the same opinion. Also, when he was a lightweight, Chavez was still mentally sharp. He had yet to hit the party scene and was as focussed and dedicated as he would ever be. Some of that inner fire had been dowsed by the time he moved to 140 and he was still way too much for everyone else in that talent-stacked division for years. Can't believe how Chavez gets downplayed. Prior to fighting Whitaker at age 31 after over 80 fights, he was generally considered to be one of Mexico's three finest alongside Sanchez and Olivares with many putting him at no1. Good as he was, Ken Buchanan does not belong in that company.
I see Buchanon winning a 12 round fight, horribly battered- but unbowed and taking the upset. Kenny was one of the most crafty fighters ever, and also as tough as nails. That all went with a cutey style, that was meant to frustrate. I see Chavez playing the bull and Ken the matador for a points win all the way up till round 9 or 10. It would be simiiar to how Meldrick Taylor handled JCC. But Ken has the whiskers to hold on for a points victory in a 12 round fight. He would be battered, bleeding and being savagely hammered but get to the bell for a win. In a 15 rounder, Chavez is just to strong . His precise and powerful combos to the head and body would break Ken , and Ken is not going to scare him with his power so Chavez will be digging in his shots. Buchanon gets TKO'ed in 14th round. Ken would also lose any rematch. ( 12 or 15 rds )
Chavez decision if a top matchup for me. Over 12 i can see why he gets a bit of love - it might be close.
Chavez is going to have a hard time with that jab. KB went 13 with DURAN so Chavez isn't doing anything that KB hasn't seen.
Chavez breaks him down from inside and out and stops him in 10. This is the Chavez from the Rosario fight, the Chavez that blasted through Mayweather's long offense, you combine those abilities and there is nothing Ken can do but take his medicine.
